Phaelia 7 More Great Blogs to Visit

Published on December 1, 2007 by Phaelia

Inspired by Amanna’s recent site sleuthing, I have a few new blogs to share with you!

  • Cenarion Labs
I really like the name of this blog. Authored by Idahoe of Nordrassil (US), Cenarion Labs immediately gives you the impression that its subject matter will be treated seriously. And although it’s only been around a couple of months, it already has a nice theorycrafting post on the attack table as well as an interesting piece on what effect the change from 24- to 48-hour auctions will have on the WoW economy.
  • The Forest Cat
The Forest Cat is an example of the unfortunate result of a blogger appearing to be enthusiastic to share her experiences with the rest of the world only to discover the rest of the world can’t hear her. Whether due to a lack of encouraging support early on or in-game mitigating factors, Keilacat of Bladefist (US) started out prolific (with 22 posts in August alone) only to mew softly in October with only 3. I’m sad I didn’t see this one earlier, but there’s enough here to enjoy reading for a while. And if you get a bug, go ahead and make a few comments. It can only help, and maybe she’ll decide to start writing again!
  • Moon Queen
Aethel from Defias Brotherhood (EU) enjoys both the Balance and Restoration aspects of playing a Druid, depending on whether she’s currently raiding. At first glance, she appears to be somewhat of a number cruncher (there are numbers in a table — what more do you need) so I am excited to see what she comes up with.
  • WarMama
The “mama” stands for “mother” as in “mother who also plays World of Warcraft” and blogs about it. Baila of Shattered Hand (US) enjoys both the DPS and tanking roles afforded to us by the Feral spec. She also relishes in how scared we Night Elves are of her chosen avatar when first visiting (go see, but be sure to bring a change of britches). (Credit to Leafshine for finding this blog first.)
  • White Whisker
Referring most likely to the one of the long, coarse hairs that adorn her mouth while in Cat Form, White Whisker includes topics on gear comparison, class changes, and end-game content. The writing is great, and I particularly enjoyed her take on “wife aggro”. (Credit to Amanna for finding this blog first.)
  • Witch Doctor
This is one of those blogs that makes you want to spend the weekend redesigning yours. Witch Doctor has a fun design and colors that convey the personality of its author, Kesela of Nagrand (EU). Normally I shy away from featuring blogs that haven’t been updated in a month or more, but I have hopes that this one won’t waste away like so many others.

Have a blog you’d like me to consider featuring? Feel free to Submit a Link via the form on my blogroll page. Overwhelmed by the size of the Druid community? Consider using Google Reader to keep track of us all!

Today I have three community-related items I'm pleased to share with everyone. And thank you to those who have taken a moment to share them with me so that I can pass them on to everyone else.

Druid UI and Wallpapers

Ronco of Ravencrest (EU) recently posted some Druid-themed UI elements based partially upon the Night Elf and Tauren flight forms. While the design and size of the elements he's created is less subtle than what I tend to pick out, he's also created some very nice Night Elf and Tauren Druid wallpapers featuring some of our class spells and forms. Here are a couple of samples:

Thank you to Magnetronkip of Frostwhisper (EU) for directing me to this find!

Hafu Knows Kiting

And wants you to know, too. Hafu of Tichondrius (US) recently released a video wherein she explains some of the basic techniques behind Druid escapism in Arenas. While some of the principles demonstrated are more easily explained than performed (at least for me), Hafu does a good job of narrating many of the conventions successfully employed by 2k+ rated Restoration Druids in Arenas. A must see for any new Arena participant. You can submit commentary on this film here.

Gray Matter

Graylo of Eitrigg (US) shares his Gray Matter, a personal WoW diary with tales of a raiding Boomkin whose guild is currently deep in Serpentshrine Caverns. Many of his posts center around his recent raiding progress with some devoted to sharing his impressions on talent specs, patches, and recommended improvements to the spec.

Phaelia Blogroll Additions

I love stumbling upon great new blogs, be they related to Druids or otherwise. Here are a few gems I've recently found:

  • The Bronze Kettle A recent discovery, the Bronze Kettle is a great blog from a husband-and-wife pair, featuring one of the swankiest designs I've seen (the wife is a designer by profession), some enjoyable articles, and a cute collection of WoW-themed recipes (for real life consumption). Ever wondered what [item]Carrion Surprise[/item] might taste like? Ask Shelbi! (And a special "thank you" goes out to Jon for assisting me with getting ItemStats up and running on my blog!)
  • The Druid's Grove The Druid's Grove is a forum community that was founded back in the days of EverQuest. They've subsequently expanded into several other games where Druids make a showing, including World of Warcraft and EverQuest 2!
  • Need More Rage What do you get when you cross an Orc and a Warrior? You wouldn't expect you'd get something intelligent enough to use the Internet, much less write a blog. But Ratshag of Cenarion Circle does both! His blog is fun and entertaining and just might educate you (but not on the rules of Common).
  • Nerf My Shaman Featuring a crisp, open layout and a healthy side of theorycraft, Nerf My Shaman is probably not intended to be an appellation to reduce the effectiveness of the Shaman class.
  • WoW Addicts Anonymous Alt-aholics anonymous is more like it! Chris has several max level characters as well as a host of alts still making their way up through the levels. A beautiful blog with a broad perspective on the game at large!
  • Zhero Tolerance I complained a few weeks ago about a dirth of Warlock-related sites and resources. Lo and behold, along comes Zhero Tolerance. To make things even better, Zhero also plays a Restoration Druid. Too bad there aren't two of him or he'd make a great Arena team!

Also, if you haven't read yet, Doomilias from A View from Behind has recently completed a switch from Blogger to WordPress. Go check out his new digs!

Phaelia A Passport to More Places to Visit

Published on September 29, 2007 by Phaelia

When I first started my blog, I spent a couple of days hours Googling for “Druid blog” and “Druid warcraft blog.” At that time, I was only able to find Amanna’s Adventures in Azeroth, a great blog that directed me to a handful of other Druid blogs. At my most recent count, there are more than twenty-five Druid blogs. They’re pretty well-distributed among our different talent specs, too, with the majority being Feral, but several Restoration, and a handful of Balance.

While I don’t actively participate in the blog communities for other classes (although I devotedly read several Priest blogs), it seems like the online community of Druid bloggers has exploded. This is good and bad. On the one hand, most of the Druids who write are generous and friendly people, citing each other’s articles and information as valuable to their own visitors. On the other … that’s a LOT of blogs to keep up with! I used to spend probably an hour every day trying to visit every blog to see who had updated. But I found that once I got in the “visit, visit, visit” mode, I was less inclined to actually “read, read, read.” Which is when I discovered Google Reader, a web application that lets you collect multiple RSS-based subscriptions in one place.

Google Reader tells you how many unread posts there are for those sites you’ve elected to watch (by subscribing to their RSS feeds) and lets you browse through a simplified version of said posts. You can even organize your watched blogs into labels (I have one for each spec of Druid, one for Priests, one for “Other WoW Blogs”, and even one for my favorite web comics). This has reduced the time I spend looking for updates tremendously and lets me spend that time actually reading the work of other authors. If you’re like me and keep up with several different blogs, Google Reader can probably save you a lot of time, too.

And on that note, I won’t feel so guilty about innundating you with yet more excellent blogs, ones I’ve recently discovered myself that you may find worthy of a bookmark or RSS subscription:

  • Magna’s Generic Sounding Druid Blog

Don’t let the name or less than eye-popping aesthetics fool you; this is a great blog for a couple of reasons: 1) she’s a Resto Druid whose guild is currently in Black Temple and 2) her writing is both interesting and insightful. I look forward to keeping up with this one!
  • Zanderfin’s WoW “Casual” Raiding

An interesting focus for a blog, Zanderfin of Bronzebeard writes of all things raid-related. And he does so in an intelligent and thoughtful manner! “Hardcore” never seemed less appealing.
