Andrige’s Tauren Tree of Life Wallpaper

April 24, 2008
Categories: Artwork, Community

Andrige delivers yet another gorgeous wallpaper, this one featuring the Tauren version of the Tree of Life form. Surrounded by the autumnal colors of Azshara, the Horde Tree is both majestic and intimidating. I particularly like the simple wooden staff he carries and the leaves falling all around him.

Oio of Dragonflight (US) has created a couple of amazing avatars based off the Night Elf version of our Epic Flight Form. You can see the smaller version (208 KB) at right or the larger version (1092 KB) here. Both images are being hosted via ImageShack because I don’t want users to hotlink my bandwidth here. If you’d like to use them, please host them yourself (ImageShack images only allow for a certain amount of bandwidth before they become no longer available).

Also, links! They build ‘em, I share ‘em. (You read ‘em.)

Featured Addon: Andrige’s Heart of the Wild UI

April 6, 2008

Druid in Flight by Shel of Bladefist (EU)

Shel of Bladefist (EU)

From Andrige, artist responsible for the gorgeous skins that have greatly enhanced the models of our forms, comes a set of UI artwork that manages to capture the majesty of Druid epic flight form. Utilizing the KG Panels addon, it lays out a pair of Tauren- or Night Elf-colored wings horizontally across the bottom of your screen. Ideal for many possible UI layouts, it’s available as a complete suite of addons or by itself for integrating into your current layout. As an addon addict — and one who has developed an affinity for a certain core group of UI addons — I’ve opted for the former option. KG Panels can be a little daunting for the uninitiated, however, so I’d recommend the former option if you aren’t comfortable poking around at the innards of addon configuration panels. Here are a few sample screenshots:

Additional Notes

My Modifications As I have a widescreen monitor (1400 x 900), I had to make some adaptations to the artwork to make it work for me, mostly having to do with the scaling. I scaled the wing panels (Left/Right Wing 1 and Left/Right Wing 2) to 1.22 and the central portion, Moon, to 1.24 (use "/kgpanels config") then I slid them around until they fit together again. Rather than using Discord Unit Frames, I placed my minimap in the center, using the addon Simple Minimap to remove its borders (along with all the minimap icons that are so annoying) and scale it up. The downside is that I don’t get the HuD-esque mana and health bars, but I’m attached to Ag Unitframes.

Andrige’s Tree of Life Wallpaper

March 14, 2008
Categories: Artwork, Community

Courtesy of Andrige, creator of the beautiful Druid form skins highlighted earlier this week, I have a gorgeous new desktop wallpaper to share with you! This wallpaper features the Tree of Life surrounded by her perennial peers, the Ancients of War and Lore. It’s my desktop wallpaper at home and at work (the two can so rarely agree), and I know you’ll love it as much as I do!

Tree of Life
by Andrige

I was actually fortunate enough to be asked for an idea for this new wallpaper. Here’s what I described:

What about a Tree of Life (in the gorgeous skin you created) standing in the middle of a semi-circle of the Ancients (the big trees that wander around Darnassus and Cenarion Expedition). So it would be like the Tree of Life had been accepted among her peers, despite her diminutive size. And maybe they’d have come to her for advice on these "short-lived humans" or something like that. Surely we’d have a useful perspective on something they would want to solicit. =) The background could be a forest like the one in Teldrassil or Ashenvale. Maybe they could be meeting in a clearing or at one of those stone shrines like the "Grove of the Ancients" that’s south of Ashenvale.

I can’t imagine a more beautiful execution! Thank you, Andrige!

2.4 Mana Regen: Regrowth as the New Raid Heal?

March 9, 2008
Categories: Analysis, Artwork, Lunar Guidance, PvE, Spells and Talents

The 2.4 Mana Regen Series

  1. 2.4 Mana Regen: The Basics
  2. 2.4 Mana Regen: The Mana Regen Calculator
  3. 2.4 Mana Regen: Regrowth as the New Raid Heal?
  4. 2.4 Mana Regen: Valuing +Healing
  5. 2.4 Mana Regen: Paladin Blessings

DPSers need heals, too! I know that it may sound like blasphemy against Elune to suggest that Regrowth — or really any spell — might be a preferred choice over that holiest of holies (most restorative of restorations?), Lifebloom, in any capacity, but please bear with me.

What are the key components of a spell suitable for raid healing?

  1. Must be quick enough to cast that we can heal more than one person in between refreshing Lifebloom.
  2. It must not disrupt or prevent our role of rolling stack(s) of Lifebloom on the tank(s).
  3. Ideally, should guard against being "overwritten" by heals such as Chain Heal, Flash of Light, or Prayer of Mending.

With the above characteristics in mind, I am going to perform an analysis of 7 seconds of Lifebloom (including its bloom since this is raid healing, not tank healing) vs. the direct heal of Regrowth. The +Healing coefficient values I will use are derived here and summarized below:

Spell, Component +Healing Coefficient
Lifebloom, HoT

0.6858

Lifebloom, Direct

0.4533

Regrowth, HoT 0.9227
Regrowth, Direct 0.5941

For the coefficients listed above I’m assuming the following:

  • Empowered Rejuvenation (affects all four pieces unequally)
  • Gift of Nature
  • Improved Regrowth (+50% additional crit rate for the direct heal of Regrowth)
  • 10% base spell crit (affecting the direct heal of Regrowth) for a total of 60% crit

Some Would Have Made Him into Boots… (5)

Zackoria
Never cared to have one of those. They may look cute now but then they grow up and there goes your neighbors dog. *CHOMP* Be sure to keep him away from such tasty morsels. ^_^

Blake
So not fair! Been fishing almost every day and not one pet reward. Perhaps the chances of you finding a croc is inversely related to the number of pets you have. I’ve demonstrated I can take care of my current 65 pets, yet Old Man Barlo doesn’t think I can handle a croc.

Tone
Hey, congratulations! :-) Those little guys are pretty awesome. I haven’t had any Crocolisks turn up in my bags yet, though I did have quite a lucky fishing streak recently, catching not one, but two Mr. Pinchies. So I’m still hoping for a Magical Crawdad. Unfortunately, so far, I’ve only gotten two Furious Mr. Pinchies (”No, Mr. Pinchy, don’t do it! AHHH!! MY EYE!!!!”) and two potion gift packs. I still have two more tries though, so everyone think...

Softi
Gratz! I’m still waiting to get one from that quest… one day!

Noobiewan
Toothy looks sooooo cute. Been hearing of Crocs in the canals for years but never seen one. Time to go hunting the canals!

These are all really good, interesting ideas. I’d love to see what Blizzard could do with this sort of thing. Then again, let’s just hope they wouldn’t model it *too* closely after The Sims… or else your Alt, who’s just starting to level cooking, will wind up burning your house down!! :-o Might have to keep a Mage around for an emergency Cone of Cold! ;-)

Thank you to everyone who commented or e-mailed me. I did finally find a solution to the problem, thanks to the assistance of reader Tone. For those curious, I added an align=”center” attribute to my header DIV. Then he had me change my div#phaelia style so that it looks like this: div#phaelia { background-image: url(images/phae_tol_side.gif); position: relative; /*z-index: -1;*/ top: 150px; left: -613px; height: 429px; width: 261px; margin-bottom: -429px; } That seems to...

I am sure druids will play a major role in next expansion. Personally I am looking forward to join (as said on www.eurogamer.net) “D.E.H.T.A. - Druids for the Ethical and Humane Treatment of Animals - in their campaign against the rapacious dwarf hunter Hemet Nesingwary”. The hunter will become the hunted, so to say. *sharpens claws*

Hi there, I’m a bit late responding to this, but I just wanted to thank you for putting together a great article. I read it back when it was first posted, but didn’t have a chance to comment until now. I found it to be a very honest and even-handed overview of tanking (and tanks! ;-) ). I can very much relate to everything you’re saying. My druid is what I would call an “up and coming” tank. I’m still fairy new to it, but am getting better all the time....
