Phaelia Mr. Phae Explains Wrath

Published on November 13, 2008 by Phaelia

While waiting for our Lich King installs to complete, Mr. Phae was nice enough to explain to our dog why she wouldn’t be getting much attention from us this week. He summarized the epic, arcing plotline of Arthas and Northrend as such:

There was some guy in a big sheet of ice. And he froze some other guy. And now we have to fight ‘im.

Sometimes I’m not really sure why we’re on a roleplay server.

That’s pretty much how I see it too. High-5 to Mr. Phae!

While we didn’t have the summary of the game here, I explained to my 13 year old that he had to learn to cook if he expected food this week. He’s more interested in FPS than WoW. Maybe we can all band together and create a temporary orphan center. :)

That sounds too much like someone else I know. Trust a guy to condense a completely epic storyline into… One line of text. :P

I have came to the conclusion that this site is 95% female.

With WotLK out, I have been trying to decide whether or not to level my druid. I have four 70s and my druid has still been my focus over the past three or so months. I have complete gear for resto, balance, and feral, so leveling in any way would be easy. And it wouldn’t take long at all to catch up with all the new Death Knights running around. It’s just that I’ve dumped over 10,000g into this toon and I don’t want to throw it all away :(

My best friend in the world is bored out of his mind with WoW and isn’t even remotely close to excited about WotLK. He has a 67 druid alt. You see where I’m going with this? Oh yeah… What to do, what to do!

@ Random- Hate to burst your bubble, but your assessment is probably incorrect. I am most assuredly (checks dirty parts) male. I’d wager that, if there is even a majority of visitors to the site that are female, that the gender ratio is very close.

That being said, those who visit here are fairly fanatical to the Druid class, so the answer is simple. Keep on twinking, make a brand new Druid to level up, and convince your friend to that he has chosen the 1 true path in WoW, and that it would be in everyone’s best interest that he continue to play his Druid. ;)

@ Phae- That assessment is very accurate and succinct, and I could see it as appropriate from a RP perspective, since he is a human after all, and they are given to understatement and oversimplification in the interest of brevity.

You’re discomfort at such an explanation is also perfectly acceptable in RP. Since you are a Night Elf, you would prefer the “full story”. You come from a culture that literally had grown used to having eternity to quibble over all the minor details of *everything*. Ideally, the long winded epic you would have preferred would have been preferably presented in an artful and poetic fashion to please the mental pallette.

It’s an interesting story, as is much of Blizzard’s stuff, but all we really need to know is that he’s got a fancy sword along with some other nifty thingamajigs, right? :D

Random change in subject, just figured I’d mention that I’m glad I stayed Resto for the expansion so far. My initial plan was to go kitty along with my brother, who would be going Arms. We also thought the dual specs were hitting as Wrath went live, which wasn’t the case, heh. I stayed Resto to grind some instances, but then we lost our group to fatigue. It was a good thing the dual specs didn’t go live. With moonfire tagging, hurricane, bladestorm, AE taunt, and heals we’ve been absolutely decimating Howling Fjord AE-style and hit 72 hours ago.

Even when soloing, I’m finding that resto is faring much better than I figured it would, simply because of hurricane and spell pushback changes. No real downtime, either. Resto is being great to me, and <3 it for that.

Last, if anyone here has been in Howling Fjord and climbed the mountain in the northeast area - that mountain simply owns. Be warned, though! You get a slow fall buff after finishing a quest there that we didn’t notice. In trying to take a shortcut down the mountain I almost landed right in the alliance city up there thanks to the floaty me - it’s dangerous, I tell you ;)

I found the fact that he explained it to the dog more funny than the fact that it was a one liner.

I also warned my gf this morning I would be playing sometime over the weekend. Doesn’t matter that we have to pack, shop, move and attend birthdays, that game is going to be played. If that happens to be at 1 in the morning on Sat, doesn’t matter, it WILL be played…

-laughs- I don’t have anyone to explain it to, but I do like his explanation.

    Well, maybe except my NaNo.

My boy plays, no one else cares… So…

“Heeeey, NaNo? I know I was on track a few days ago, but I’m going to abandon you for a week or so for this other game you’ve been competing with ever since we’ve started. I do love you, and please, muse, don’t run away…

“What’s it about? Oh. Erm. Lots of shinies, new places, and grinding again. I hate grinding. And a Lich King — something about a big bad frozen supposedly-scary guy.”

am currently juggling around with my talent points,
used to be full resto ^^
but was wondering, what do you think of this spec:
    http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=0xGfuicoIbZZfchuMuxwz
was aiming at a spec that requires no shapeshifting, little downtime, and high solo value.

@Kestrel: Don’t encourage him. I happen to know he’s read all of these comments!

@Stepford Mom: Haha … Mr. Phae and I like to joke about how our kids will have to gather a quota of tradeskill materials every week to earn their allowance.

@Gwyn: I’d like to think it was for the sake of the dog’s understanding level. Which is essentially “Bacon”, “Treat”, “Outside”, and “Peanut.”

@Random: Ha! I don’t think the site’s audience is 95% female, given that there are still more males playing than females. Although it wouldn’t surprise me to find that the audience has a larger % female than the playerbase as a whole. P.S. I’m sure you know what advice I’d give. ;-)

@Yggdrasil: Wow. I guess he was roleplaying then, after all! Great perspective.

    @Amradorn: Sometimes.

    @Cusper: I assume it’s downloaded. :-D Having fun?

@Nilianil: GREAT point! And whether any of those thingamajigs have Spirit and spell power!! Glad to hear you’re having fun specced Resto! I’m doing the same with Mr. Phae’s new Gnome Warrior. I still want to try out deep Balance at least for a little while, but this is fun so far.

@Wise Fox: We have a very special dog. ;-) (Yes, we’re THOSE kind of people. Ugh!)

    @Crythia: *cries because it’s true*

@Sophi: Followed by questions about where he can find the loot, eh?

@Lin: Oh, Lin! I’m so sorry. Hopefully he returns to you soon … perhaps with a BoE blue or two instead of flowers!

@Currant: ^_^ What happens in Goldshire, stays in Goldshire.

@Kong: I quibble with including both Naturalist and Improved Regrowth in a build. The two seem redundant to me. I’d either drop Tranquil Spirit + Naturalist + Empowered Touch or Improved Regrowth. On the Balance side, I think that Improved Moonfire is overrated. Everything else looks fine. =)

Living Seed, Replenish, and Gift of the Earthmother (13)

Werebeef
I don’t think viewing living seed as a % of total healing is really the best way to look at it. It’s great for helping a player that is at very low health get back up to very high health and do so quickly. You don’t look at nature’s swiftness as a percentage of overall healing. I don’t think it makes that much sense here either. It’s also a talent that is better when the content is hard, when you have less overhealing. There’s also something...

Kalfurion
Hi Phae, long time no talk. I want to point out that I’m 0/0/71 and I love it. I don’t really find the talents in the balance tree to be that useful for my needs. I’m in a raiding guild as I’m sure you know and the three talents you spoke about suit my needs so well. My rogues, DK’s and our feral druid love me when I keep a rejuv on them for replenish. I’ve joined pugs and people look at my spec and make silly jokes and I don’t know why,...

Kiryn
I really like Replenish, personally. I find myself with far more mana regen than I need in most boss fights, so mana conservation isn’t much of an issue for me. I don’t even know why I carry mana potions if I never use them, and I’m far more likely to be innervating the priests than myself. I often treat rejuv-swiftmend as a near-instant 8k heal on a 15 second cooldown. It isn’t cheap, but it can bring someone back from the brink of death in a little over a second...

Perrin
Phae, One thing that needs to be pointed out clearly to everyone is the misconception about “After spell haste” and the tooltip for GotEM. GotEM removes 0.3 seconds from your GCD. It doesn’t matter if its applied after or before spell haste, because its a factor of the 1.5 BASE GCD. Spell Haste is also a factor of the 1.5 BASE GCD. Therefore they don’t affect each other. The tooltip says 20%, but unlike the usual use of % based talents, the reduction is additive...

Phaelia
@Flynx: Thanks for the link - I’ve added it above to help flesh out the section about GotEM and spell haste! And I’m never sure whether information like this would be better suited to the Healing role forum or the Druid forum. >.< @Pike: I’m glad to hear that you’re still leveling your Druid. I imagine there is a lot of overlap between Hunter fans and Druid fans! (After all, as a Druid, you’re your own pet!) @Pfooti: Thank you! I’m glad you found it...
Guest Post: Leveraging Shadowmeld (22)

Riverwish
As far as i’m aware they changed it so that when you meld in a raid instance you don’t leave combat so you can’t drink/eat or reset pot cooldowns in a raid bossfight, this is why you have to be quite lucky at escaping combat in a raid situation. I did manage to escape for Patchwerk numerous times but other bosses are trickier, I think it depends really on who your fighting and what room you’re in :) All these things can be done in 5 mans though. Riverwishs...

Vreenash
Thanks for posting this up Phae :) Keep the ideas flowing guys. It’s good to hear the different ideas and situations you’ve all been using shadowmeld in. Here’s another one for you: While leveling my way to 78 (still with the ground mount in northrend), there were quests that required killing a normal mob boss. They were usually in the centre of a town, camp or cave. Instead of killing all the mobs on the way to boss, just mount up and run directly to him....

Bearess
One note about SM that should be brought up. Yes it will bring you out of the fight in a lot of cases, but some bosses can still find you. AOE attacks will bring you out of a SM. So watch that. I learned that the hard way when Instructor Razuvious broke loose, and I skittered off a corner and SM. His next “victim” was too close to me when he let out his “Distrupting Shout” and I became next on his list. Figured I’d drop a line since it is a weakness to SM...

Arcaedus
Great info! I’ve often used SM to get out of combat when soloing but have put it to limited use in the instance/raid environment. @Riverwish: I’m not sure that you have to be the last player alive/targetable. I’ve had both successful and unsuccessful attempts with SM hiding on a wipe. My main example is on Patchwork. When multiple tanks go down and its a sure wipe, you are able to run behind one of the pillars and meld. As long as no one drags Patchy to you he should...

Ever since I came back 1/2 year ago from a forced 2-year hiatus from WoW, I’ve been frequenting your blog. You’ve provided us with a wealth of great information and analysis. Thanks to you, my Grid actually gives me useful information beyond how much healing I need to pour into the box. Also, your comments on the Belkin Nostromo N52 TE got me interested enough to try one out for myself. So far, it has improved my healing response time and even saved my groups from a few...
