Wrath of the Lich King Female Hairstyles Preview!

July 31, 2008
Categories: Wrath of the Lich King

barber_pole It is with great pleasure that I share with you the first real preview of the new hairstyles for female characters in Wrath of the Lich King! The contents of these images were discovered (NOT created) and submitted by community figure Andrige, best known for his modified shapeshift skins and a host of other Druid-related art projects. He sent the female images to me and the male images to John of Big Bear Butt. You can check out the male preview here!

Thanks, Andrige!!

Disclaimer: Andrige wanted me to mention that, because he isn’t familiar with all of the existing hairstyles, that it’s possible some of these may already be in the game. Also, there don’t appear to be new hairstyles for Dwarves, yet. Some hairstyles look as-yet incomplete like the right-most Night Elf style with the bald spot.

Personally, I am a little disappointed that so many hairstyles appear to simply be crossovers from one race to another (Blood Elves appear to borrow styles from Night Elves, Gnomes, Humans, and Draenei). They look nice enough, and I can appreciate that it reduces development time to reuse previously created content, but I hope there are some new additions, as well!

P.S. For a nice preview of the new barber shop, check out Banana Shoulders’ guide, Shave and a Haircut!

I’m pretty attached to my male Night Elf’s current rockin’ green hairdo. However, I’m really hoping the new barber shop will allow the poor guy to finally get some eyebrows! :-o For some reason, in the current game, you can’t make a clean-shaven Night Elf male without also forfeiting your eyebrows (a minor detail I missed during character creation!). The male hair samples on Triple B’s site give me hope. :-)

These are pretty… disappointing. I thought we would get to see some new hairstyles, not just cross-race hairstyles. I’m hoping some new styles get added to these ones. The tauren and troll styles need some love.

One of the things we should keep in mind is that this isn’t the end-all be-all. Once the interface for change is set up, there is nothing to stop them from throwing in a few hairstyles now and again. Or maybe even achievement/quest reward hairstyles (you teach the barber a new one to help you with a disguise). To change hair is the first big thing. We probably aren’t seeing new hairstyles largely because the system, and the already complete templates or sets - are the ones complete and ready to demo, whereas the new ones will take more design time. I definitely hope we see a few new ones in the mix before it goes live, but if we don’t I have a definite feeling we’ll be seeing them in the patches.

Ugh, we’re going to be seeing way too many people with pigtailed characters now. :( Pigtails are best left for the little kids, not adults. Adults never look good with them.

Pfft, speak for yourself. I look rad with pigtails!

All the races should have a pigtailed option. But leave the long, pretty braided ones to the dwarves. We’re the only ones that can work it. ;)

As one of the three people on this planet who play a female dwarf, I am eager to see the new variety of dwarven hairstyles. In the meantime, the troll ones are super cute.

Where are the girl dwarves? I know they’re underrepresented in general but… I was looking forward to seeing the new options.

Also, I’ll be kinda sad if troll females only get those new options and not other ones… seeing as how some of the other races get a lot more.

  • Gravatar farahima Said:
    August 2nd, 2008 at 11:28 am

@Ashtaar and Tulani - I think our three races (cow, orc, and UD) are going to keep getting shafted because we really aren’t one of the “pretty” races. No sex appeal, unless one is into bestiality or necrophilia (I don’t know which paraphilia would apply to orcs). After all this is another game that thinks it’s main (almost exclusive) demographic is the teen to late 20’s male (WHAT!? women play video games? Nowai!). I’m post-BC, but I’ve been assured that tauren females looked incredibly horrid in the original release. If we’re vocal enough, we’re more likely to get Blizz to also include women in their demographic and plan accordingly.

  • Gravatar Farseer Lolotea Said:

I’m somewhat disappointed that a lot of these hairstyles just seem to be “recycled.”  But there are a few that I like (notably, the troll ponytail and some of the styles for orcs).  And I’ll still be keeping my fingers crossed for Blizzard to let my draenei girls shave their heads.

Still wondering where the dwarves are, by the way.  Is the hatred for female dwarves really that universal?

@Daniel: No worries at all. :-) I just had to contact my hosting service and things got fixed pretty quickly.

Re: Pigtails — I love them! Although I must admit I’m more partial to the looped braids option for Night Elves. Very Gaelic.

Re: Dwarf Female — They’re coming. Andrige accidentally omitted them from the pack(s) he sent me. Sorry!

@Sean: Those tails are pretty enticing, especially when they sway as they walk. ^_^

@Farahima: I agree. I really hope there are some more interesting options for Tauren Females.

Re: Recycled Hairstyles: I’m hoping that the reason these were datamined and not officially made available is that they haven’t added the “new” hairstyles yet and didn’t want to deal with the outcry over the reuse of pre-existing ones. I’m guessing we’ll see new groups for each race.

  • Gravatar Myze Said:

I think the crossover hairdos are a good idea, because I hate a lot of the Troll hairstyles (though only one of the new styles is palatable.) I’m not really interested in most of the brand new ones because it looks like they tried too hard (or not enough) and ended up with some rather unnatural and off-putting hair. Like most of the human female’s new hair choice. It almost looks like she has a Stranglestaff growing out of her head.

This is actually 1 of the things that I am most looking forward to seeing with the expansion. I seem to have screwed up about 50% of my toons’ hairstyles. Ironically they all seem to be the ones I play the most.

The question is: when will Blizzard allow us to have some form of customizable “living quarters” in the game? That is a new goody I would love to see. Plus, it’d get my wife to play again, I think. ;)

I agree with Phae on the reason for few “new” hairstyles, and I imagine that new hairstyles will probably added with patches even after the expansion. I’d suggest being patient. I agree that certain races are ignored in the aesthetic department though, but maybe that will get fixed, too.

  • Gravatar Sarah Said:

Man… I hope the blood elves can get the draenei styled pigtails. SO much better than the gnome pigtails.

  • Gravatar Sazira Said:
    August 4th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

That’s funny, I thought most of those newer human styles look MUCH better than the old styles do.

My biggest qualm is that the undead are so.. well.. dead versus undead. They managed to make every other “evil” or “horde” race look cool but undead just bothers me. it’s not so much that they’re rotting away to nothing but couldn’t they rot away with some style? Who said all undead don’t risk losing most of their flesh by bathing?

Give me a clean undead with no ratnest hair and i’ll forget the fact that when an undead puts on a NEW garb they get from ++++insert T5 armor vendor name here++++ that it looks as if they wore it all their life. The body has bones, sure.. but do they have to ruin it with the bones stickin out of the back of everything they wear… really? They are bones, not razorblades.

    Hey, I’m soooo disapointed.

And most disapointed I am on the Troll, Draenei and Orc hairstyles.
(I don’t really care much about the other races :P)
But why the hell …. WHY THE HELL did the belfs get the most pretty Draenei hairstyle while draenei got their ugliest?!
I just wanna puke! I’m seriously so disapoined and I wish that Blizzard will not make any further expansions because then they’ll loose a good geek >;O
Why can’t they give some new people contracts to create hairstyles?
Is it that hard to create NEW hairstyles?
    Troll looks like butch lesbz.
And orcs looks like friggin 80’s synth xD
And now draenei got ugly silly-girl hairstyles.

Wasn’t it enough to just bring the friggin belfs to the Horde at first?
Do we have to suffer more?

This makes me so angry that I just wish that I could rip someones guts out and smash them into a rock then lick them up and puke them up again.

    Baiii ^^

Do you have a source on the coefficients thing? I can’t find a good source after some digging. Reading the official talents, it appears empowered rejuvenation is the same style of bonus, but did not get doubled. I’m not sure I see the logic in it relating to spell power. 40% of healing vs 40% of spell power should be the same relative increase no matter the coefficient being multiplied by. 40% spell power before hand is the same as 40% after the coefficient. Same for the...

Kelerain
Regarding the coefficient, I think the glyph would be complete garbage at half the coefficient. I can see no role for it to play there. Assuming a full coefficient, It seems to get somewhat poor HPM, but not unreasonably poor (in the range of a current HT or one-off regrowth). Nourish is much better in this department. It does seem, however, to get good enough HPS to make this a reasonable ‘tradeoff’, getting HPS numbers in the chain-regrowth-with-glyph range. If you had...

Phaelia
@Kelerain: The 1.4 change was made because of spell power changes. It was necessary to increase its bonus from 1.2 to 1.4 so that the overall bonus was unchanged. However, since we’re working with +Healing rather than spell power, the 1.2 is actually still the relevant statistic. You aren’t the first person to ask about that, though, so maybe I should have explained it in the article itself. Thanks for following up!

Kelerain
You really got me interested in this one. I’ve been playing with the HT Glyph analysis, and I may have uncovered an error. From above (and your spreadsheet): “CoefficientHealing Touch = Base Coefficient * Gift of Nature * Empowered Touch * Master Shapeshifter = 1.0 * 1.1 * 1.2 * 1.04 = 1.3728″ Empowered touch is now a 40% increase, instead of a 20% increase, giving: 1.0 * 1.1 * 1.4 * 1.04 = 1.6016 This is substantially better, and may influence your analysis. Ht...

Phaelia
@Kelearin: I do see what you mean about the potential for HT. It’s still not clear, though, if its casting time reduction will function the same way that Naturalist does (i.e., it won’t get a smaller +Healing coefficient, despite a faster cast time). It seems like a 1.5 second spell with a 100% coefficient would just be insanely OP. The fact that healing is reduced by 50% makes me suspect that they also reduce the coefficient, but we won’t know until those Glyphs are...

@Nyxtaru: Sadly, I didn’t realize Rank 1 roots were so effective until just recently. Poo. @Tone: To be honest, the loss of green armor is a bit disappointing for me, too. With Improved Tree of Life giving an armor bonus, I was looking forward to finding some myself. Although I guess there wouldn’t really have been any with healy stats. ^_^ Definitely going to try to shy away from cloth, tho! Great point about being able to role-shift during combat. @Tildir: That would be...

Yggdrasil
Returning after considering this for a bit, but I can see a way that our fine Feral friends can retain most, if not all, of the (relative) armor that they already have. The 1 item that a Druid has use for that no Rogue (or any Warrior or Paladin tank) ever will- the weapon. Remove FAP from from 2 handed Maces and Staffs (since we want items to become more generally useful to more than 1 class, anyways, and Druids carrying Rogue leather means there will already be plenty of attack...

Wrath Recap (21)

Phaelia
@Tone: I agree, and I really worry about the viability of a “Cat Druid.” Rogues really struggle to justify their raid spots these days due to the superiority of ranged damage. How can a Druid compete if, as they’ve indicated, they still do less damage than a Rogue even when specialized?
