Edit 7/29/2008 12:35 AM MST: Added newly discovered Glyphs to the "Example Glyphs" section! Separated all Glyphs into their respective specs.
Many of you are probably already aware that Wrath of the Lich King will include the new Inscription tradeskill. You may not be familiar with the dynamics of said system, so here’s a brief summary based on the extensive article at WotLK Wiki:
- Inscription is used to create scrolls (like the ones that give Intellect, Spirit, Stamina, etc.), Glyphs, and miscellaneous items like the [Carrot on a Stick] and even an item called [Scroll of Recall] that’s reminiscent of the Scroll of Town Portal from Diablo II (but on a 15-minute cooldown).
- Glyphs are semi-permanent enhancements (think Gems from Jewelcrafting) that can be applied to a player through a special interface.
- Glyphs come in one of two types:
- Greater Glyphs provide major upgrades to spells such as the addition of a stun component or increased duration of a HoT or DoT.
- Minor Glyphs provide small upgrades like the removal of a reagent cost or a cosmetic improvement. One example is the [Glyph of the Penguin] that turns a Mage’s Polymorph into a Baby Penguin!
- Most players have “slots” for six Glyphs, two of each type listed. Inscriptionists (Inscribers? Scribes?) will have access to one additional Glyph, but it’s not clear what type that Glyph will be.
- The primary gathering tradeskill associated with Inscription will be Herbalism.
While very few Glyphs have been added to the Beta server, several of the ones that have been discovered are related to Druids. Here are the ones we know about in all their as-yet-incomplete-and-sometimes-misnamed demi-glory:

Suggested Glyphs
The examples above give us some indication of what types of Glyphs we might expect to see at release. Here are a few that I’d love to see considered:
- Glyph of Hawtness
Empowers a Greater Glyph to increase the duration of your Lifebloom and Flourish spells by 1 second. - Glyph of Barkskin
Empowers a Greater Glyph to grant a passive 20% stun resistance while Barkskin is active. - Glyph of Abolish Curse
Empowers a Greater Glyph to cause your Remove Curse ability to bestow a passive buff providing immunity to further Curses for 4 seconds. - Glyph of Transcendence
Empowers a Greater Glyph to grant immunity to Banish while in Tree of Life form. - Glyph of Alertness
Empowers a Greater Glyph to grant immunity to Hibernate and Scare Beast while in Dire Bear Form, Bear Form, and Cat Form form. - Glyph of Verdant Regeneration
Empowers a Greater Glyph to grant your heals over time a 5% chance to apply themselves to one additional nearby target. - Glyph of Soothing Rains
Empowers a Greater Glyph to increase resistance to interruption by damage by 50% while casting Tranquility. - Glyph of Resilient Regeneration
Empowers a Lesser Glyph to grant your Innervate buff a 30% resistance to dispel. - Glyph of Cat-up-a-Tree
Empowers a Lesser Glyph to allow the use of Barkskin while in Cat Form. - Glyph of the Bulwark
Empowers a Lesser Glyph to allow the resistances granted by your Mark of the Wild spell to stack with other resistance auras. - Glyph of Ancient Thorns
Empowers a Minor Glyph to increase the duration of your Thorns spell by 20 minutes. - Glyph of the Curmudgeon
Empowers a Minor Glyph to remove the reagent cost from your Rebirth spell. - Glyph of Spring
Empowers a Minor Glyph to grant Tree of Life a more springtime appearance. - Glyph of High Summer
Empowers a Minor Glyph to grant Tree of Life a more summertime appearance. - Glyph of Winter’s Heart
Empowers a Minor Glyph to grant Tree of Life a more wintertime appearance.
As you can see, many of these are PvP-based; I had trouble thinking of things for PvE that wouldn’t overpower them and wouldn’t seem too much like already existing talents (increasing the +Healing coefficient on a spell, for instance). If you could create your own Glyphs for Wrath of the Lich King, what would you choose?

Greater: Glyph of Deeper Life
Lifebloom stacks 4 times.
Greater: Glyph of Hiveborne
You are able to cast that insect spell in tree form.
Greater: Glyph of Eternal Regrowth.
Crits to regrowth increase the HoT portion by the same percentage as the initial heal.
Dammerungs last blog post..I rebel! No title!
I’d like to see effect based mechanics for druids. Ex (all numbers pulled out of thin air):
Greater:
Glyph of the Knitting Roots: Increases your healing by 15% while target is stunned.
Last Chance Glyph: Increases healing by 15% while target is under 25% total life.
Glyph of the Forest Ascendant: Increases your healing by 15% while target is cursed.
Glyph of the Serpent Conqueror: Increase healing by 15% while target is poisoned – or alternatively — Rejuvenation Ticks have 50% chance to have you cast Abolish Poison on the target.
Glyph of Forests Fury: Summon an extra treant!
Glyph of the Star’s Lament: Every starfire spell that misses increases the damage of your next spell by 5%.
Glyph of Nature’s Wrath: Reduces the resistance of your target by 10 for arcane and nature spells.
Lesser:
Glyph of the Everliving: Applying a daze or stun has a chance to reapply a rejuvenation or regrowth spell on the target.
Glyph of the Sundered Star: Wrath criticals have a chance to reset moonfire and insect swarm timers.
Minor:
Glyph of Autumn’s Splendor: Your spells take on autum colors. (Orange rejuv’s!)
Glyph of the Forests Heart: Your travel form looks like a stag.
@Dammerung and Zaira: Wow, these are all fantastic!! Your suggestions are going to make the “increases X by Y% for Z seconds” that we ACTUALLY get seem really, really boring. LOL!
And I LOVE the idea of having the seasonal spells actually affect particle effects, as well. Snowflakes for winter; flowers for spring; red, yellow, and brown leaves for autumn; and um … bored kids for summer?
I’m sure all those inscriptions for druids are great, but I stopped reading after Penguin Polymorph. DO WANT
Oh man, Glyph of Not-looking-overwatered would be awesome. I would be all over looking like a slightly snow-covered wintery tree in Northrend.
Or Tree-of-actually-looks-alive.
Phae… you had me at Polymorph penguin…
I will now do everything in my power to get that poly penguin for my mage… i thought turtle was the highlight of my mage career, i now live for better things…
TuxedoHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Lesser: Glyph of Cat-up-a-Tree
Empowers a Lesser Glyph to allow the use of Barkskin while in Cat Form
All cat form abilities are instant cast. What would be the use of this one Phae?
@Nick: I was under the impression that kitties can’t use Barkskin from Cat Form at present. This would ostensibly allow you to use Barkskin (which activates the GCD, btw) without having to switch out, lose Energy, and switch back.
@Phae: I think Nick was wondering why a cat would want to use Barkskin at all, given there is no need for spell pushback immunity in cat form. The only use would be for the damage reduction, which — while nice — isn’t really worth spending the glyph on. Cat form doesn’t offer any innate damage reduction like Bear does, so using Barkskin and invoking the GCD doesn’t cause any problems except for leaving the druid unable to melee dps for 1.5 seconds. If survival is an issue (hence the need to use Barkskin in the first place), then that 1.5 seconds of dps isn’t going to matter very much. Ultimately this would be a waste of a glyph slot (although the name made me LOL).
Greater:
Feral mind breaker – Causes your Maim ability to interrupt spellcasting and prevent any spell in that school from being cast for 3 sec.
Lesser:
Cat swiftness – Critical hit from shred/mangle can increase your haste by X for 3 seconds.
Minor:
Fate of Warscreamers – when you are smashed you can faint from time to time. Ouf of combat only.
As of the patch that just went up on beta (version 8681), there are a number of new druid-related Inscriptions. Per mmo-champion.com, they are:
# Glyph of the White Bear – Changes the appearance of your bear and dire bear forms to that of a polar bear.
# Glyph of Frenzied Regeneration – While Frenzied Regeration is active, healing effects on you are 20% more powerful.
# Glyph of Growl – Increases the chance for your Growl ability to work successfully by 8%.
# Glyph of Mangle – Increases the duration of Mangle by 6 sec.
# Glyph of Swipe – Your Swipe ability now hits 1 additional target.
# Glyph of Shred – Increases the damage dealt by Shred to stunned and incapacitated targets by 20%.
# Glyph of Rip – Increases the duration of your Rip ability by 3 sec.
# Glyph of Rake – Your Rake ability prevents targets from fleeing.
# Glyph of Swiftmend – Your Swiftmend ability no longer consumes a Rejuvenation or Regrowth effect from the target.
# Glyph of Innervate – Your innervate ability now has an additional 20% strength mana regeneration effect on you in addition to the effect on your primary target.
# Glyph of Rebirth – Increases the amount of health on a character brought back to life via Rebirth by 100%.
# Glyph of Regrowth – Increases the amount of your initial Regrowth heal by 50% if your Regrowth effect is still active on the target.
# Glyph of Rejuvenation- While your rejuvenation targets are below 50% health you will heal them for an additional 50% health.
# Glyph of Healing Touch – Decreases the cast time of Healing Touch by 1.5 sec., the mana cost by -25% and the amount healed by -50%.
# Glyph of Lifebloom – Increases the duration of Lifebloom by 1 sec.
# Glyph of Starfire – Your Starfall ability increases the duration of your Moonfire effect on the target by 3 sec.
# Glyph of Insect Swarm – Increases the damage of your Insect Swarm ability by 30% but it no longer affects your victim’s chance to hit.
# Glyph of Hurricane – Your Hurricane ability now also slows the movement speed of its victims by -20%.
# Glyph of Starfall- Increases the duration of Starfall by 2 sec.
# Glyph of Wrath – Increases the chance you’ll resist spell interruption when casting your Wrath spell by 50%.
# Glyph of Moonfire – Increases the periodic damage of your Moonfire ability by 75% but initial damage is decreased by -90%.
# Glyph of Entangling Roots – Increases the damage your Entangling Roots victims can take before the Entangling Roots automatically breaks by 20%.
Some of these are incredibly powerful, others not as much… although the best might be the first one, so we finally have a different bear form to look at!
BTW.. mine was only… mine ideas.. they are still not implemented.
too late to edit.
Im really disappointed because of feral inscriptions.
My character is currently Master of Gathering (herbalist/miner) because swift flight form is just made for stealing flowers from alliance (upss… I didnt say that).
but at the end whet you have alt or two you fond that you can provide all mats from alts or just buy it in AH, but you will never get truly epic gems or get nice armour.
(tbh. when I saw that some enchants from LW will be BoP in WotLK I decided to roll LW, but now Im thinking about choosing second specialisation.)
I was sure that Scriber (I like this version) will get something more that only one slot more.
some of buffs are just silly. like +30 minutes on raid buffs.
well… so now GotW will last for 90 minutes instead of 60, but your group will be wiped in 20 anyway. wow!
I dont know what to think about Shred bonus.. I think that +20% can be useful during going to 80, but for endgame raiding its a waste.
the one and only truly feral DPS glyph is mangle.
+6 seconds to mangle.. yes! less work to mangle bots!
May it be that Glyph of Starfire has a Mistake ??
Having Starfire increase the MF dot by 3 seconds would be way more logical.
In addition to the Glyph of Moonfire – n1
I’d like a Glyph of Awesome, a Greater Glyph that makes all buffs cast on you last through death.
@Ketsugi: Oh, I see what you mean.
I think that having Barkskin available in Cat Form could be tremendously helpful in PvP since it not only reduces damage from melee but spells and ranged, too. It’s also activated while the cat is feared/stunned/incapacitated. It could actually be a worthwhile Glyph for Arenas and BGs.
@Warscreamer: LOL @ Fate of Warscreamers; I like the spell interrupt on Maim, too.
I’m pretty sure that Phaelia will be dropping one of her Production Tradeskills in Wrath to nab Inscription. I’m one of those tabletop gamers who has always opted for items that provide utilities (like the ability to climb walls) over those that provide performance increases (like pure Agility), so these Glyphs seem like CANDY to me. And remember that some of the “sillier” ones that increase duration of buffs are probably not Greater Glyphs. Instead, you’ll get to choose your conveniences.
@Cuer: You must have posted while I was editing to add these. Thank you for sharing!
@Nighthoof: I could see that perhaps it is a mistake. These Glyphs are by no means final but I did lift the exact description from what has been datamined by WoWHead so far.
@Flawlless: That would be godly.
Phaelias last blog post..Beta Patch Changes (Build 8681)
Glyph of Femininity – Allows druid forms to have a more feminine appearance cause my bear form SHOULDN’T HAVE A PACKAGE DAMMIT!!! /cry
Glyph of the Willow – Changes ToL appearance to a willow.
Glyph of Lifebloom and Healing Touch will be MASSIVE. The Healing Touch moreso. That makes the unwieldy 3 sec cast in a land of healers with huge haste effects a 1.5 sec heal talented.
@1280 on beta w/o Empowered Touch, I was hitting off HTs in Tree for around 6500 on average. Even with the amount reduction, that turns it into a 1.5 sec 3250+ heal.
The downsides are that it’s still slow compared to some of the hasted casts other healers will have in raids (Priests get a 1 sec Gheal when Holy Concentration has procced) and we lose a big heal for NS+HT.
@Phae: I’m still unsure about that. If you’re casting Barkskin in cat form, for whatever reason, then survival is your priority. Caster form does not offer any more or less survivability than cat form, so I see the only use of the glyph being to remove the GCD invoked from shifting back into caster form afterward. If you’re stunned/feared/incapacitated, then being in cat or caster form wouldn’t make a difference (apart from your vulnerability to polymorph, which you can easily shift out of once you’re no longer stunned/feared/incapacitated).
ketsugis last blog post..How to Not Peel a Hard-Boiled Egg
@Kaera: Glyph of Healing Touch is pretty much useless, imo. I don’t get it; if someone wants a fast heal, why not to use Nourish instead, which’s available whether you’re resto or not?
Besides, it’s what you’ve said, we’d be losing the NS-HS emergency heal, and I’m definitely not ready for that.
@hokuto: Don’t forget that we don’t get Nourish until post 70. The HT glyph would be amazing for leveling, or earlier 1.5 second casts. Looking at endgame, you are right, it looks like Nourish will probably pull ahead in the final counts, and leaving the glyph out leaves us the NS+HT emergency button.
@Hokuto- If I am not mistaken, Empowered Touch only affects Healing Touch, The healing coefficient is still likely to be for a 3.5 second cast spell (at -50% healing with this glyph) so that would be 2 reasons, which, for better or worse, still seems pretty weak. It will make your Healing Touch be something like a slightly more efficient Nourish. Yes, effectively losing NS-HT is a little crippling. I suppose its a somewhat nice glyph if you did not invest any talent points in the Healing Touch or Nourish related talents, but I can’t see any reason not to at this point, at least for PvE. There is quite simply too much concentrated awesome in the Resto tree right now, and with Healing Touch and Nourish usable in ToL, it just doesn’t seem sensible, if you are a dedicated healer, to not take those talents. Without them, I get the sense you will be an incomplete healer.
Edit- @ Zaira- Excellent point!
@Farahima: I would love to be a girl tree! After all, isn’t it true that holly bushes come in two genders: male and female? The female bush grows berries that are fertilized by the pollen from the males. I know I’d like to be adorned with flowers.
@Kaera: I’m not 100% sold on the Healing Touch Glyph though admittedly I haven’t really compared the result with Nourish and Regrowth. Right now I’d say I’m partial to the Glyph of Swiftmend and Regrowth and thankful I’m switching to Inscription so I might also be able to pick up the Glyph of Lifebloom!
@Ketsugi: I guess I’m not really qualified to speak on behalf of Ferals in PvP. I was only guessing from what I’d read that they’ve had trouble getting focus fired and being forced into Bear Form and just assumed that it would be helpful to be able to use Barkskin as Blizzard has previously promised. I can definitely see how it would be less useful than in caster form since, as you say, no abilities have casting times.
@Zaira: Interesting point, but who’s to say that Glyph of Healing Touch would be available prior to 70+? I am guessing from the low level recipes we’ve seen so far, that Inscription won’t really come into play until the levels that follow Outland. Of course, the bonuses (and penalties) of that Glyph should theoretically be applicable at any level, so maybe you’re right.
Personally, and this is without having done any actual comparison, I prefer to reserve my 2-3 available Major Glyphs for bolstering abilities other than Healing Touch since I have grown accustomed to not counting it among my retinue of available healing spells. But I suppose only time will tell what my eventual decision is!
LOL! Cat-up-a-tree…hehehe…So far I am happy about the Frenzied Regen buff +20% to healing w00t!!! And I will be an inscriptionist so the extra Glyph is awesome!! And I wonder what other cool forms we can get…Already get a polar bear one!!!
@Abagoo: Yeah, I’m hoping to turn into a giant flower…
@Phaelia – I never considered flowering, but it totally works. I seem to fixate on the willow image because it’s exclusively feminine when used as an adjective in English. That, and the branches of the weeping willow would work as flowing locks of hair…. My fear, however, is that Blizz will hear the complaints and slap some lipstick and eye shadow on the original forms before calling it a day.
Anyhoo, I’ve noticed to my horror that this obsession with castrating my bear wang is turning into a personal crusade. I secretly hope no one puts two and two together and realizes I’m always the person who starts squawking about my mane every time the issue comes up. Also, I need to apologize to everyone *cough* Andrige *cough* I’ve tried to conscript. Sorry guys :p
@Farahima: A willow tree could be quite beautiful, but I’m worried that the engine doesn’t allow for graceful enough movement of the trailing leaves. That or it would kill my framerate!
3200 in 1.5 seconds sounds like a very slightly faster regrowth without the HoT to me??? It even costs more mana at lvl 70
@I: Yeah, the Glyph of Healing Touch seems pretty … pointless to me. Maybe they designed it before adding Nourish.
I was just visiting the PlusHeal Forums and got linked back here for the inscriptions. I was specifically thinking about the healing touch inscription.
I was curious if A) as mentioned, the healing coefficient was going to remain at the 100% mark, that would mean that stacking +heal would boost this above nourish fairly quickly, as nourish is limited to the 3/7 coefficent.
and B) not being in the beta, is theinscription always on? We have the option of Downranking a spell, and macros always write Healing Touch (rank 13) . Do you HAVE the option to cast a spell without the benefit of the inscription?
While most of the readers here are straight up ToL druids, consider how powerful this spell becomes to dreamstate healers who dont have natures swiftness? Or in my case, when I have to heal as feral cause we are light a tank in our small guild, I dont have access to either Swiftmend or Natures swiftness, this would be obscenely useful in an encounter when I have to heal. When running Instances now as feral dps, sometimes the healer dies, and I can pop out, swap weapons and spam healing touch on the tank ( assume rebirth is on cooldown) till we can get the healer back up.
Basically, Inscribed Healing touch doesnt look to me like its designed for full resto druids, who have more tools available for healing than some of our offspec
Siblings.
Edit.
When will the -50% heal be applied? Off the base heal amount from healing touch? Off the coefficient from +heal/spellpower ( which would bring it in line with curent 1.5s cast spells ) or off the final heal total, knocking an 8k heal down to a mere 4k?
In each case, different mechanics are used, and I can see different ways to maximize its use.
@Qix: I’m under the impression that the Glyph of Healing Touch will reduce its healing coefficient in line with its reduced casting time. I think it will be one of the least worthwhile Glyphs. I’m not sure if anyone knows if the Glyphs are always “on” — I think most of what’s been released has been datamined and isn’t necessarily available for use … but not being in the beta myself (oh /cry!), I can’t really say for sure.
Interesting idea about the Glyph being designed to help Ferals and healers who aren’t specced as deeply Resto. However, I imagine Glyphs are more like gems and are semi-permanent. They’re probably destroyed when you replace them (to keep Inscriptionists in business) and Ferals aren’t likely to want to replace their tanking-oriented Glyphs with something to heal an instance if it means they have to repurchase them.
