Many authors have covered the addon Grid in one form or another. WoWInsider’s Marcie Knox wrote an article back in January entitled Unkicking Butt (a Grid Story) in which she unraveled many of the mysteries behind the addon’s daunting configuration menu and shows you step by step how to customize your layout. Just recently, Sioban of Lifebloomer shared his experiences with the addon in Addons: Grid, which helps you to get in the right mindset when setting up your grid to your personal taste, including a list of helpful addons that can augment this already very robust set of unitframes.
I’d like to share my take on Grid with a more detailed look at how — and why — I have mine set up the way that I do. Step by step and addon by recommended addon, here’s a Resto Druid’s comprehensive guide to customizing Grid. Please note that you should have first gone through Marcie’s article on Grid for information about resizing, borders, and text. This guide is intended to help you get the most of the Druid-specific features available in Grid.
General Configuration Tips
You can configure Grid in one of four ways. In order of decreasing difficult/annoyance:
- Command-line
This method requires you to familiarize yourself with a lot of … well … commands. I can see how learning a few key commands might be useful for adjusting your Grid for a special encounter, but I wouldn’t want to make all my changes this way! - Minimap Icon
If you’re one of those archaic people whose minimap looks like it has a case of the measles with 20+ minimap icons displayed, you can right click on Grid’s config icon (looks like this
) to configure the addon through a series of cascading menus.
- FuBar Icon
Similar to the Minimap Icon above but appears on your FuBar instead. - GUI Configuration
The makers of Grid have also created a UI screen that can be accessed via /grid config. This is the method I’m going to assume you’re using for any configuration instructions.
Addon: Grid Dynamic Layout
Restoration Druids are often asked to “roll” Lifebloom stacks on one or more tanks for the duration of an encounter. If you organize your raid frames by name, group, or — in this age of Druid, Paladin, and soon-to-be Death Knight tanks — it can be harried to move your cursor across a few inches of screen real estate. Imagine if instead you could have all your tanks grouped together within a half inch of each other, all in a column. Grid Dynamic Layout does just that:
A beautiful thing: Lifebloom rolling on 4 Tanks
Once installed, you can switch to using Dynamic Layout as your preferred layout by going to Layout > Raid Layout and selecting Dynamic Layout. You can then access GDL’s configuration under Layout > Dynamic Layout. GDL seems to do a good job of determining who is a tank, healer, ranged DPS, or melee DPS, basing its decisions on stances and auras assumed by each raid member. However, it is sometimes necessary to override their categorizations (I often find this to be true for Elemental/Enhancement Shamans) by adding names to the “Forced” lists, separated by commas. This is also useful for fights where “tanks” are atypical classes like a Mage for the Maulgar fight. By adding the Mage’s name to my “Forced Tanks” list, I ensure that he is more visible than he would be if lumped in with the ranged DPS.
The “Defaulted DPS warriors” list is an interesting setting that allows you to specify Warrior who will default to melee DPS but automatically be moved to the tanks group should they have need to swap into Defensive Stance.
Monitoring Thorns
Display showing Thorns missing on Beefshanks
Keeping Thorns on tanks can be a tedious task with its 10-minute duration (which should have been increased along with Paladin Blessings) and the fact that it can’t be cast when in Tree of Life form. I’ve configured Grid to display a corner indicator for those raid members who have Thorns cast on them. Since all the tanks are grouped together via the Grid Dynamic Layout above, I can tell at a glance if I need to refresh the buff. To set this up yourself:
- Select Status > Auras.
- Under the Add New Buff textbox, enter “Thorns” and press Enter.
- Select Frame > [Position] (ex. “Bottom Right Corner”).
- Uncheck everything under the Statuses section.
- Check Buff: Thorns.
If you want to adjust the color of the indicator (I use white), it’s available under Status > Auras > Buff Filters. You’ll also find a Class Filters option but, given the fact that tanks come in three or more flavors, this option isn’t especially helpful.
Addon: GridStatusHoTs
Enlarged unitframe example with all HoTs running
With the GridStatusHoTs addon you can easily keep track of your own Rejuvenation and Regrowth effects … while simultaneously being aware of those raid members who have a Rejuvenation or Regrowth on them from you or someone else. The advantage of this is that you can easily see who in your raid is eligible for a Swiftmend, regardless of whether of not you’ve been the one to give them the HoT. At the same time, by separating your own indicators, you can keep track of when you need to refresh a particular HoT.
I reserve the top left corner for Regrowth and bottom left corner for Rejuvenation because the default WoW cursor is oriented such that it partially obscures the bottom and right sides of the health bars when you move your cursor over them, making these two positions the most visible.
To configure the position of these two indicators:
- Select Frame > [Position] (ex. “Top Left Corner”).
- Uncheck everything under the Statuses section.
- Check Buff: My Regrowth.
You can change the options for this indicator under Status > My HoTs > Buff: My Regrowth. I use a bright green that fades to a dark green for Regrowth and a bright pink that fades to a dark pink for Rejuvenation since these are the colors I intuitively associate with each spell. I reduced the Threshold to Activate Color 2 to 2 seconds and the Threshold to Activate Color 3 to 1 second since Rejuvenation and Regrowth are spells you don’t want to refresh before they elapse. Make sure the Enable option is checked.
To create a “universal” Swiftmend-able HoT indicator:
- Select Frame > [Position] (ex. “Top Right Corner”).
- Uncheck everything under the Statuses section.
- Check Buff: Regrowth and Buff: Rejuvenation.
You can adjust this indicator through Status > Auras > Buff: Rejuvenation and Status > Auras > Buff: Regrowth. I like to use yellow for these two since it complements the pink and green of the other two.
Addon: GridStatusLifebloom
Rather than a simple Yes/No indicator, GridStatusLifebloom provides you with a countdown of the time remaining on your Lifebloom as well as a color-based indicator of the number of stacks you have running. You’ll want to set it up as a line of text (which is why using an addon that gives you a second or third row of text in addition to the line with raidmates’ names is so helpful). To set up GridStatusLifebloom:
- Select Status > Lifebloom > Lifebloom Stack.
- Specify Color, Color 2, and Color 3. I prefer Red, Yellow, Green like a stoplight.
- Set Priority to 90 or higher.
- Make sure that Enable is checked.
- Select Status > Lifebloom > Lifebloom Duration.
- Adjust your Global Cooldown Duration to whatever is appropriate given your level of spell haste (I’m guessing that this determines when the countdown starts).
- Select Frame > Center Text 2.
- Uncheck everything under the Statuses section.
- Check Lifebloom Duration.
- Set Priority to 89 or lower.
Monitoring Heals with GridStatusIncomingHeals
Enlarged unitframe with an incoming Healing Touch
GridStatusIncomingHeals is an addon whose core functionality has since been incorporated into the main Grid addon that utilizes the IncomingHealsLib library to “color” raidmates’ health bars based on the amount of healing they are expected to receive from spells currently in the process of being cast. This is an exceptionally helpful tool for reducing your total overhealing, especially if you utilize a lot of Regrowth (which you should). Recommended configuration:
- Select Status > Incoming Heals.
- Check Ignore Self.
- Select Frame > Healing Bar.
- Check Incoming Heals under the Statuses section.
By choosing the Ignore Self option, Grid won’t display your own incoming heals, giving you a better idea of who is healing your currently selected target so that you can cancel your spell if you think someone else will hit them first.
Note: To view heals from other players, they must also have the IncomingHealsLib installed and active. This library is widely used by many addons such as Pitbull and Ag Unitframes. To view the raidmates who don’t currently have it installed you can click the “Show HealComm Users” button under Status > Incoming Heals dialog.
Addon: GridStatusMissingBuffs
Don’t be that guy. The one who never refreshes his group buffs after a wipe or rebuffs people who have been resurrected. With GridStatusMissingBuffs, you can add a visual cue to your unitframes when someone is missing Mark of the Wild. I prefer to set mine up as a border, second in priority to the aggro indicator. To do this:
- Select Status > Missing Buffs > Mark of the Wild.
- Set Color. Normally, I’d be inclined to use pink because that’s the color of the spell icon, but it would make it difficult to see when Rejuvenation were active so I’m using a bright blue.
- Set the Priority to a value lower than that of the aggro indicator (Status > Aggro Alert).
- Select Status > Missing Buffs > Mark of the Wild > Show.
- Toggle the setting for When in Combat to you personal preference.
- Select Frame > Border.
- Check Missing Buff: Mark of the Wild.
Decursing and Removing Poisons
Because we all know the Mages aren’t going to take time out from Pew, Pewing, it’s important that we can see an indication of when raidmates are poisoned or cursed. One option is to display an icon in the center of your raid frame representing the debuff. The disadvantage of this is that it can obscure other important information like Lifebloom counters or make it more difficult to see the target’s health bar. Instead, we can configure the border of the frame (currently being used for Mark of the Wild and an Aggro Indicator) to light up when the person needs a decurse. To do this:
- Select Status > Auras > Debuff: Curses.
- Set the Color to your preference (I use green for poisons and pink for curses).
- Ensure that the Priority is higher than the priority used to display Missing Buff: Mark of the Wild as well as the Aggro Alert (tanks get cursed, too).
- Select Frame > Border.
- Check Debuff: Curses and Debuff: Poisons under the Statuses section.
Another plugin that you might find handy for this purpose is GridStatusRaidDebuff which adds a status and indicator for the debuffs cast by many common raid mobs.

Simply amazing
I’ve been reading your blog for about half a year now and it has completely turned my healing around and the same goes for the other restos in my guild. Despite what people say about resto druids in T6 content, we’ve owned the meters since day one and your blog plays a large part in this

I’m curious, how much does this addon slow your FPS? Since I have am limited in what I work with, I’m a little wary of anything heavy.
Also, my blob shirt came in the mail and I love it
June 26th, 2008 at 7:12 am
wow, wow, wow…
is there a chance to connect grid with ready check?
to see who is ready and not?
I still have to keep pitbull for that.
June 26th, 2008 at 7:29 am
of course you can!
just visit http://files.wowace.com/sw-g.html click page 2, and search for GridStatusReadyCheck
just test it at home!

Holy cow!
Just wanted to chime in and say how much I LOVE your site thanks to things like this. My druid is still coming up in the world (currently stacking some rest exp @ 68) and has every intention to go full tree. I hadn’t bounced into grid just yet, but wow, GREAT review!
Question though, doesn’t grid do one click debuffs? Poisons/Curses? I haven’t raided yet on my druid, so is it not our responsibility? I just hate seeing a tank with a -healing curse on him and trying to heal through it if someone else is dropping the ball.
June 26th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Good article Phae. I think everyone has grid configured differently
I think another important thing to mention with grid is adding custom debuff tracking for debuffs you need to heal through. Under Status -> Auras -> Add New Debuff you can enter a debuff name, and then assign that debuff to one of your indicators - possibly a centre icon to make it stand out or a side indicator using GridIndicatorSideIcons. I use it for Encapsulate on Felmyst, Burn on Brutallus (that’s my assignment) Agonizing Flames on Illidan - basically anything that tells you that you are going to need to give heals or increased heals to the target. GridStatusRaidDebuff has a bunch of preconfigured ones, but I’ve preferred to set up my own.
I’d also mention Clique, which in my opinion is Grid’s other half that he can’t live without
June 26th, 2008 at 9:45 am
@Spyvax: No Grid itself does not add click to heal. You need another addon called “Clique” to do that.
June 26th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Nice work Phae and thanks for the nod, you’re too nice. How are you tracking curable debuffs if not through grid I wonder what you use instead.
I currently use grid for my debuff tracking and have the center icon show the debuff, which is nice except that, it ends up obscurely health bars more than I like especially when I’m not assigned to decursing.
@- Spyvax consider also mouseover casting as an alternative to Clique I find it to be a little faster and it provides me with more casting options without using a ton of modifiers. Phelia has a good post on the Macros you need:
http://www.resto4life.com/2007/11/27/heal-self-by-default/
With a little practice it’s easy to set up your macros to do a lot for you without having to move your mouse all over the screen.
June 26th, 2008 at 11:22 am
@Sioban - you can change the size of the centre icons. I don’t have access to a PC with WoW right now to check where the option is, but I’ve got curse and poison set to a smaller centre icon than the default in order not to obscure too much.

@Bolera: First of all, nice avatar. Rawr. Secondly, I’m really glad you found this article (and others here) helpful. Thank you for letting me know. =)
@Bellwether: I’m not sure how this affects my FPS, to be honest, as I can’t raid without SOME form of unitframes so I’ve never seen the net difference between nothing and Grid. I DO know that running Grid Mana Bars really sucked up a lot of resources, so I decided to drop it. Also, I’m very glad you like the Big Green Blob shirt!
@Warscreamer: Thanks for that! I don’t really have to monitor ready checks, so it’s not something I included.
@Spyvax: I was initially daunted by Grid, too, having tried it more than a year ago and having my eyes crossed by all the configuration. It wasn’t until Marcie’s article on how to set it up so that it’s readable that I recognized what a great tool it is. I’ve added a section at the bottom for Poisons/Curses. I don’t think it’s possible to one-click remove them (I use mouseover decursing and a Gamepad, myself) without some other addon.
@Treibh: That’s a good idea. I’ll have to add GridStatusRaidDebuff to my own Grid layout. From everything I hear, Clique is great, but it seems like it would be redundant with a Gamepad/mouseover healing.
@Sioban: I’ve added a section on Poisons / Curses above, though I’ve written it from work so I’m not 100% certain on its accuracy. ^_^

Phae, my hubby has a not-so-secret crush on you. He checks your blog everyday and insists I do the same. I’ll be getting Grid for my raids this weekend! You are awesome on a stick.
June 26th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
The only frame rate issues I had with Grid was when I used GridManaBars. I uninstalled that and my frame rate is just fine.
I adore Grid. The minimalistic display gives you only the information you really need. Every other UI addon I’ve tried has too much visual overload. Grid can really focus your attention on what you need to see.
I use Xperl for Target, self, target of target, focus and stuff but Grid is for raid.
June 26th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Since your now my new favorite Grid Expert….
Is there a way to add Pets to Grid? Not even for raiding, but for PvP/Arena. I tend to get yelled at by my 2v2 partner when his pet dies, but the only way Ive been able to avidly watch his pet is the standard WoW Party interface! And screw that, I need mah Grid!
June 26th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
@Phaelia - Yes, Clique would be redundant in your setup
I prefer a 5-button mouse and Clique-style mouseover-clicking, but they pretty much accomplish the same thing.
@Nyxtaru - Grid supports pets as of a few months ago. I use static layout - group 25 + pets.
June 26th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
I keep thinking about Grid but I’m an information junkie and Pitbull tells me so much stuff… I haven’t been quite brave enough to try yet. Good article.
June 26th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Great information, I will definatly be referring to this to customize my Grid. I’ve been healing a lot more on my alt priest so improving the look and feel of grid will be very welcome.
June 26th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
@Boudi: Oooo. I’m not sure how to respond to that. Haha. Um … it was secret to me?
And hey who told you about my super-secret-catchphrase, awesomeness-on-a-stick! That’s me! (Get it? Cause I’m a tree! Wonka wonka!)
@Zute: Same here! I thought it would be nice to be able to watch Shadow Priest/Arcane Mage mana bars so I could give out Innervates before having to be asked, but it just keeeeled my game. Such a shame! (Oh, and I use AG_Unitframes for my non-raid frames, though I’ve heard good things about XPerl, too.)
@Nyxtaru: My Grid always shows me pets. I’ll take a look to see if it’s a special option or what have you.
@Addie: I actually used to use Pitbull, but it was eating up a lot of resources so I “cut back” to just AG Unitframes. Then a reader suggested that I try Grid for my unitframes and, once I learned to customize them, have been hooked. Give it a shot.
@Dezdemone: Excellent - I’m glad it was helpful!

thanks. I gave up on Grid and have been using X-Perl just because it’s so much easier to configure. But Grid is definitely more lightweight. But with this info I can get started on the right track at least, Grid just throws you in the water :).
June 27th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
@Yunk: Oh, yeah. That’s a real problem for the Grid addon and, as I understand, is one of the thoughts behind the development of Grid 2, an Ace3-based version of the addon that is supposedly more intuitive for novice users. We shall see!
June 27th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Very interesting! I’m gonna have to check this out! I installed Grid a while ago but never got around to messing with it. I have been using Healbot for a long time now and I love it. I usually have it grouped by class. It shows HoT icons next to the bars, incoming heals, and I can ctrl-alt-right the tanks to add them to a “My Targets” list. The things it’s missing are showing the lifebloom count, and the icons fade out, so I cant tell exactly how much time is left, and sometimes the icons do not show, this happens a lot with regrowth. I am used to using all 5 buttons on my mouse as well as ctrl alt and shift modifiers for everything including heals, buffs, poison/curse, innervate, and battle rez, so I am thinking it should use Grid with Clique from what I’ve heard. I’ll mess with it tonight and follow up later. Also I am between raiding guilds for now ( mine quit raiding because of attendance issues.. it’s been a hard week..) so I have a little time.
June 28th, 2008 at 2:50 am
@Primevalus: The latest version of Healbot adds a timer per HoT.
I have used Grid and Healbot, they both work fine. Its just a matter of preference.
June 28th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Very nice atricle thanks Phae. I had trouble with gridstatuslifebloom addon, it did not show up in the status list with the latest version of grid r73933, I went back to the older version I had r60382 and it worked fine. I had been using dotimer with grid to monitor my blooms, but this going to make my screen so much cleaner. Thanks !
June 30th, 2008 at 11:30 am
LOL…You see that long confusing explanation???!! Thats why I’m feral! My biggest concern in raid is making sure the no one tops my on my Omen. But when WOLK comes out I’ll get this crazy box mess. Although I did see something important in this thread.. MY NAME! I feel so special! Anyways I think the whole thorn set isn’t working, my brambles is always disappearing!! Naw you’re great Phae now if only everyone could be as awesome as you. And to get Nesbit to decurse more just threaten to take his innervate away, it worked for me!
June 30th, 2008 at 11:39 am
@Primevalus: I used a unitframes addon grouped by class before I used Grid, but I can’t tell you how much more helpful it has been to be able to group by role instead. Most addons that group by class show Druids at the top and Warriors at the bottom since they arrange them alphabetically. That can make it very hard to keep an eye on multiple tanks.
@Lotha: Thanks for the tip about GridStatusLifebloom. I haven’t run into any issues (I update through the WoWAceUpdater), but it might be helpful to others.
@Abagoo: Haha … Thorns is such a PITA. I really wish they’d increase the duration to 30 minutes and think it was overlooked when they helped out Paladins’ Blessings. I’ll have to try the Innervate thing, although you know there are OTHER things I could threaten to deny him if he doesn’t help me decurse… like dinner.
June 30th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Ok, help. I did the whole:
# Select Frame > [Position] (ex. “Bottom Right Corner”).
# Uncheck everything under the Statuses section.
but i dont see thorns anywhere on there!!
June 30th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
@ Gidget: Me too! I even tried installing some other Grid addons with no luck.
Also, I am having an issue with the Lifebloom Stack option. The Red/Yellow/Green colors of overriding the target’s overal health level. Does anyone know a way to see both?
Thanks!
June 30th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
ugh, im so glad it isn’t just me. a few of the things on here i can’t do. I wish i could! Phae’s looks soooo perfect. =(
June 30th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
@Gidget and Myc: Oh, sorry! I forgot the step where you have to add Thorns to the list of Buffs to monitor. Before you can add it, you will need to:
# Select Status > Auras.
# Under the Add New Buff textbox, enter “Thorns” and press Enter.
Then it should be available as described. I’ve modified the original article to include this necessary step. Thanks guys, and sorry for the headache.
@Gidget: As for the LifebloomStatus overriding the target’s health level, you will want to assign it to a different text line. You can add a second line of text to your Grid unitframes by going to Frame > Advanced and checking the Enable Center Text 2 Indicator checkbox. You should then see a Frame element called Center Text 2 that you can assign your Lifebloom stack to.
June 30th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Good news! I joined a guild and should be doing some Hyjal and BT this week. Yay! Back on topic.. one thing i am having trouble with is i cant get the name to show up in the frame. Last time it was there even by default but now, nothing. Oh and I have the same problem with thorns, it’s not there! EDIT: just as I was writing this you fixed my (our) thorns probem. Thanks! EDIT 2: I restarted WoW and the names are there. Hmmm..
June 30th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
@Phae: Thanks so much for your response! Yup, got that far with the text, but what I was referring to was that when lifebloom stack is on, it “takes over” the health bar so I can’t see what health the target currently has. All I see is a small red bar, medium yellow bar or large green bar depending on how may LBs the target has. Then when the LB blooms, I can see health again.
Have been fiddling around with options for a couple hours and no dice.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:45 am
@Myc: Can you go to Frame > Healing Bar and check to make sure nothing related to GridLifebloomStatus (Lifebloom Duration, Lifebloom Stack) is checked?
July 1st, 2008 at 9:48 am
@Phea: (Hey, it’s me..over here!) Yes, I have. Neither LB Stack or Duration are checked. I am fairly new to heavy lifting the settings in Grid, but I think all stones are turned over.
I might zap my Grid settings and start over later today when the serves are back up.
Thanks again!
July 1st, 2008 at 10:30 am
@Myc: Before you do that, check all the different frame elements don’t have LB Stack or Duration checked (look especially at Frame Alpha and Border).
July 1st, 2008 at 3:49 pm
I vote phae has a “learn to use grid” chat session.
July 1st, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Okies, got the thorns working, *and* everything else. Now only problem i have is gridstatuslifebloom. Its not on the list at all. I have the most current version of both, *and* i reverted back like Lotha suggested. no go =(
It doesnt even show on the list.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:27 pm
@Gidget: Someone else describes a similar problem here: http://lightnatured.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1380
They claim that if you install GSL from http://files.wowace.com/sw-g.html that it worked for them. Can you see if that helps?
July 10th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Phae, thanks for this wonderful article. I’m having trouble configuring the Thresholds for Buff: My Regrowth and Buff: My Rejuvenation. I don’t see a Threshold option at all. Am I missing something?
July 12th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Thank you for taking the time to create this article. It was a really nice introduction for me, putting things into a useful context. I’ve been wanting to look into Raid healing a bit more, so this was perfect. Currently, I’ve only healed 5-person content, and for that I just use my own custom interface that I set up using a freeform button addon called “FlexBar2.” I like my setup a lot, but there’s no way I could scale it to groups of 10 or 25, so getting into something like Grid will be a must for me eventually.
Thanks for the great work!
July 15th, 2008 at 12:57 am
@Hepzibah: You set the threshold (and other settings related to “My HoTs”) by going to Status > My HoTs > Buff: My Regrowth although you might intuitively have looked under Status > Auras > Buff: Regrowth. Can you see if that might be your issue?
@Tone: You’re welcome! I’m glad it’s helpful.
July 26th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Is it not possible to upload a grid profile for others to install? I have tried multiple times to get grid set up, but always end up giving up.
August 9th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
I just found this site and switched from Healbot to Grid, thanks to all your advice here. I too am having trouble setting the timer for my regrowth and rejuv I don’t see an option to see the threshold timer, but I’ve looked where you say. Perhaps I’m missing something though — do I adjust via the “set duration” command? /confused
Thanks for this guide!
August 9th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
nevermind! updating the add-on ftw!
August 14th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
@Mooyagi: It might be possible, yes, but that profile would have to be updated every time one or more of these addons were updated. The idea of this article was to teach you how to maintain your own set up. Sorry!
@Khree: I’m glad you got it figured out.
