The Arbor Day Challenge

May 7, 2008
Categories: Community, Humor

ancients In honor of June 1 as Arbor Day … in Cambodia (I missed this year’s U.S. observance), I am issuing a challenge to readers! It will test both skill and dedication! I want PICTURES of your TREE OF LIFE with the following:

  • A [Cenarion Expedition Tabard], demonstrating your worthiness to be hugged by that hippiest of factions
  • One or more of the following: [Enormous Barbed Gill Trout], [Red Winter Hat] or [Green Winter Hat], [Grayson’s Torch] or [Elune’s Lantern], [Farmer’s Broom] or [Pitchfork], [Crown of the Fire Festival]
  • The 2-piece T4, T5, or T6 set bonus OR, alternatively, the chest, helm, and legs from Wildheart, Cenarion, Stormrage, or Dreamwalker sets! Show us your old-school pride!
  • 2 stacks of [Heavy Netherweave Bandage] for handing out to those people who still use the annoying “Heal Me!” emote
  • A stack of [Lesser Mana Potion] for giving to people who ask for your Innervate
  • A pair of gloves enchanted with [Enchant Gloves - Fishing]
  • The [Violet Signet of the Grand Restorer], demonstrating unwavering commitment to fixing whatever the heck is wrong in Karazhan
  • A [Shiny Red Apple] with which to taunt hungry Ferals
  • A [Swashbuckler Shirt] of any color; ‘ARRRRGG!! YE BE A PIRATE TREE!’
  • The ability to build a [Basic Campfire] without setting yourself ablaze (actually including the bonfire in your picture is purely optional)
  • 20 x [Maple Seed] to use when casting Rebirth out of combat or for planting baby versions of yourself

Submission Requirements

To participate in this challenge, you must send me a screenshot of your Druid meeting the above requirements. In honor of Arbor Day, pictures should be taken while in Tree of Life and should meet the following criteria:

  • Nothing should obstruct the full and glorious view of your character you’ve (no inventory screens or character sheets; we just want to see your Tree).
  • Include a description of your surroundings or really any sort of flavor text you like.
  • Feel free to include your favorite non-combat pet in the picture, particularly if you feel it complements your roleplay backstory.
  • Be creative with your backdrops, and feel free to combine entries with your friends. A forest of trees would be great!
  • Note that if your Tree of Life is of the … purple variety, I will not include your character server name.

I’ll be compiling all the appropriate entries into a gallery of images for the site and showcasing a few of my favorites. Entries should be in TGA or JPG format and can be sent to me at resto4life@NO SPAM!.com. Entries must be submitted no later than Friday, May 30th.

Advertising the Arbor Day Challenge

For other blog authors interested in encouraging participation in this contest, Valenna has created the following *.PNG banners (feel free to create your own):

I hope that many authors from the Restoration branch of the World Tree will opt to play along themselves!

Taking TGA Screenshots in World of Warcraft

If you prefer to take your screenshots in TGA format, use Notepad or another plain text editor to open the config.wtf file found in your WTF directory. Find and change the lines that look like this:

SET screenshotFormat “JPG”
SET screenshotQuality “3″

So that they look like this:

SET screenshotFormat “TGA”
SET screenshotQuality “10″

Save the file and close it. Note that you’ll need to restart WoW for your changes to be effective.

@Wynn: Nope, just the picture in Tree form. ;-) The proof will be in the pudding!

=\ The only thing I don’t think I can manage is point number 1. I don’t think I can work myself up to go heroic UB running, even though I should for my feral offset.

@Tinil: Psssst!! It’s just a picture of your Tree! There’s no way to confirm that you’ve matched any of the above criteria. Which is sorta the point. =)

@Calandris: You know you want to hug us!

@Zackoria: OOOooo thanks for putting that up!

@Thor: You can feel free to add them. But be sure to search for them by variable name first (without the number so search for screenshotFormat and screenshotQuality just in case your values are different).

Impressions Solicited: Spell Haste (4)

Runycat
The only druid who’s had any luck with spell haste in our raid set up is our Moonglow/Dreamstate healer. I can’t personally comment on the effectiveness, but if you’re rocking a ToL build, I’m not sure how viable stacking spell haste really is. One thing’s for sure–I’d never stack it as a crutch over other stats. In addition to the items out of ZA, there are a number of haste-stacked items out of BT as well, most notably: Shroud of the...

Thorgrim
Another good reason to look at spell haste is if you, like me, are druid-healing-challenged and have trouble maintaining even a 3 character triple stack; spell haste gives you a lot more room for error.

Lidon
True, you would run out of mana fast Miyra, but the situation proposed in the email is not the average case. For runs like ZA where there are only two tanks, this allows you to squeeze off more raid heals in between keeping lifebloom up. One of my biggest annoyances with ZA is the spirit bolts that Hex Lord Macaroni dishes out to everyone. Usually tossing one rejuv on each person keeps them alive, but unless I start those early, I only get 6 or so off, relying on the other healers, and...

Miyra
While it is definitely true that the healing output afforded by having 5 GCD’s available for tanks is amazing, I don’t think it could be sustained for very long. You are looking at a minimum of 880 mana per cycle if you just used Lifebloom. At that rate you would burn through 10,000 mana in ~57 seconds. Even figuring in a full mana bar’s worth of innervate and chain potting you would be out of tricks in 2 and a half…maybe 3 minutes max.

Grats! I’ve been religously doing my fishing quest each day and have yet to get a baby croc! I’m sure Toothy is just as happy to be your pet as you are at having him. :)

Phaelia
@Tone: Ohhhhh! Okay! Yes, that must be the reference. I only vaguely remember the monster hugging on poor Bugs. But I’ll never forget the line. (Okay, I Googled it to get it exactly right. Same thing!) :-D

Tone
Re: Abominable Snowdruid Oh, I had just thought that your words were a reference to the Abominable Snowman from Bugs Bunny (”My own little bunny rabbit! I will name him George, and I will hug him, and pet him, and squeeze him….”). I was concerned for little Toothy’s safety, at the hands of an over-enthusiastic new owner! ;-)

Mooire
Grats!!! I’ve religiously been doing the fishing quest and have yet to get a Croc pet! They’re so cute with their big green eyes. :)

I worked for Microsoft (not in Windows or in IE) so I might be biased the other way but I believe the IE differences are not really that sinister. IE 6 is a pretty old browser, it was released in 2001. A lot of the CSS standards were relatively young at the time, and CSS support in other browsers wasn’t stellar either. IE 7.0 improved on CSS support from IE 6.0, it’s just that other modern browsers had more releases and improved more during the same period of time. Ironically...

It’s centered now, and there is a tree looking out from behind the central column. So GJ, have a cookie :)
