2.4 Mana Regen: Paladin Blessings

The 2.4 Mana Regen Series

  1. 2.4 Mana Regen: The Basics
  2. 2.4 Mana Regen: The Mana Regen Calculator
  3. 2.4 Mana Regen: Regrowth as the New Raid Heal?
  4. 2.4 Mana Regen: Valuing +Healing
  5. 2.4 Mana Regen: Paladin Blessings
  6. 2.4 Mana Regen: Getting the Most out of Innervate

With the changes to mana regeneration in Patch 2.4, it’s worth revisiting my earlier post on Blessing of Kings vs. Blessing of Wisdom. Just as before, the MP5 from Blessing of Wisdom is straightforward:

Blessing of Wisdom Rank 7
150 Mana 30 yd range

Instant cast

Places a Blessing on the friendly target, restoring 41 mana every 5 seconds for 10 min.  Players may only have one Blessing on them per Paladin at any one time.

Paladins can also pick up a 2-point talent from their Holy tree called Improved Blessing of Wisdom. This talent increases the MP5 from Blessing of Wisdom by an additional 20%, from 41 MP5 to 49.2 MP5. Since this Blessing grants pure MP5 it is unaffected by Spirit, Intellect, or percent time inside the Five Second Rule.

mrc_kingsWhile the effective contribution of Blessing of Wisdom is pretty cut and dry, Blessing of Kings is not so straightforward. It grants an additional 10% to both Intellect and Spirit which, in turn, affects your overall mana regeneration. The easiest and quickest way to determine its contribution to our mana regeneration is to use the Mana Regen Calculator to find our regeneration without Kings and then again with it. I’ll use myself as an example, but obviously you should do the same using your own stats:

Raid buffed but without Blessing of Kings, I have around 640 Spirit and 540 Intellect. With Kings, those numbers jump to 704  and 594. I can plug these values into the MRC as follows:

As you can see, my mana regeneration increases from 401 to 455, an increase of 54 MP5 from Blessing of Kings alone. This is in addition to the other benefits afforded me by Blessing of Kings such as 800 more mana, 16 +Healing to my Tree of Life aura, and some extra hit points from the Stamina increase. For me, at least, there is no question which of the two buffs I’d rather have if required to make the decision. In general, my order of preference for Blessing requests is as follows:

  • Trash Fights: Salvation, Kings, Wisdom
  • Boss Fights: Kings, Wisdom, Light *

* Of course if the boss fight is an aggro-sensitive one, you might interpose Salvation before or after Wisdom. Examples of such aggro-sensitivity can include needing to heal through an aggro wipe, adds that spawn throughout the fight that will need to be picked up by one or more tanks, or a threat-sensitive pull. (Thanks to commentor Treibh for these examples!)

:D Thanks Phae! It’s nice to know my question can still bring this sort of thing out!

Yeah, I couldn’t believe when I looked back at the original post and discovered that it was you who had asked the question! How times change, eh? =)

Thanks for re-evaluating this Phae I knew you’d do a better job with it than I ever would :)

@Nevelatte: Thank you! It’s actually useful for all sorts of comparisons like that one. Pookies from Pookies Is Not a Bear used it to pick out her raid consumables.

@Sioban: YW! Glad it was helpful. =)

Direct Heals in Wrath (21)

Do you have a source on the coefficients thing? I can’t find a good source after some digging. Reading the official talents, it appears empowered rejuvenation is the same style of bonus, but did not get doubled. I’m not sure I see the logic in it relating to spell power. 40% of healing vs 40% of spell power should be the same relative increase no matter the coefficient being multiplied by. 40% spell power before hand is the same as 40% after the coefficient. Same for the...

Kelerain
Regarding the coefficient, I think the glyph would be complete garbage at half the coefficient. I can see no role for it to play there. Assuming a full coefficient, It seems to get somewhat poor HPM, but not unreasonably poor (in the range of a current HT or one-off regrowth). Nourish is much better in this department. It does seem, however, to get good enough HPS to make this a reasonable ‘tradeoff’, getting HPS numbers in the chain-regrowth-with-glyph range. If you had...

Phaelia
@Kelerain: The 1.4 change was made because of spell power changes. It was necessary to increase its bonus from 1.2 to 1.4 so that the overall bonus was unchanged. However, since we’re working with +Healing rather than spell power, the 1.2 is actually still the relevant statistic. You aren’t the first person to ask about that, though, so maybe I should have explained it in the article itself. Thanks for following up!

You really got me interested in this one. I’ve been playing with the HT Glyph analysis, and I may have uncovered an error. From above (and your spreadsheet): “CoefficientHealing Touch = Base Coefficient * Gift of Nature * Empowered Touch * Master Shapeshifter = 1.0 * 1.1 * 1.2 * 1.04 = 1.3728″ Empowered touch is now a 40% increase, instead of a 20% increase, giving: 1.0 * 1.1 * 1.4 * 1.04 = 1.6016 This is substantially better, and may influence your analysis. Ht...

Phaelia
@Kelearin: I do see what you mean about the potential for HT. It’s still not clear, though, if its casting time reduction will function the same way that Naturalist does (i.e., it won’t get a smaller +Healing coefficient, despite a faster cast time). It seems like a 1.5 second spell with a 100% coefficient would just be insanely OP. The fact that healing is reduced by 50% makes me suspect that they also reduce the coefficient, but we won’t know until those Glyphs are...

@Nyxtaru: Sadly, I didn’t realize Rank 1 roots were so effective until just recently. Poo. @Tone: To be honest, the loss of green armor is a bit disappointing for me, too. With Improved Tree of Life giving an armor bonus, I was looking forward to finding some myself. Although I guess there wouldn’t really have been any with healy stats. ^_^ Definitely going to try to shy away from cloth, tho! Great point about being able to role-shift during combat. @Tildir: That would be...

Yggdrasil
Returning after considering this for a bit, but I can see a way that our fine Feral friends can retain most, if not all, of the (relative) armor that they already have. The 1 item that a Druid has use for that no Rogue (or any Warrior or Paladin tank) ever will- the weapon. Remove FAP from from 2 handed Maces and Staffs (since we want items to become more generally useful to more than 1 class, anyways, and Druids carrying Rogue leather means there will already be plenty of attack...

@Adremma: Oh, I’m sorry about the confusion. >.< Thanks for the correction! @Kalfurion: That store looks a lot like the Anthropologie stores we have in the States. I probably couldn’t afford anything there, either! :-D @Eglador: Thanks. Corrected! :-) @Graylo: Oh, my mistake!! I’ve adjusted the description to be more clear.
Wrath Recap (21)

Phaelia
@Tone: I agree, and I really worry about the viability of a “Cat Druid.” Rogues really struggle to justify their raid spots these days due to the superiority of ranged damage. How can a Druid compete if, as they’ve indicated, they still do less damage than a Rogue even when specialized?
