Phaelia Daily Quest: Intercepting the Mana Cells

map_basheres_landing I’m not always the most diligent at completing daily quests. Occasionally, I’ll go for stints where I complete the BEM quests for Simon Says, Bombing, and Nether Ray Wrangling for a week or so and then stop until raid repairs and consumables have eaten through most of my surpluses. Patch 2.4 introduced a whole new set of dailies for me to neglect, including some with the potential to grant Heroic Badges! One such quest is called Intercepting the Mana Cells and is given by Exarch Nasuun on the Terrace of Light in Shattrath City. Once you have the quest, you’ll have to fly up to North-central Blade’s Edge Mountains, to an area marked on your map as Bash’ir Landing. The most convenient flight point is Evergrove which is southeast of your destination (but labeled "Ruuan Weald" on your map).

Once you arrive at Bash’ir Landing, you’ll need to kill the resident monsters until one of them drops a [Bash'ir Phasing Device]. Restoration- and Balance-specced Druids should avoid the Unbound Ethereals. They’re immune to arcane damage (Moonfire and Starfire), so you’re better off killing the Ethereals whose names start with "Bash’ir." As far as I’m aware, none of them are claw or tooth immune, so kitties and bears can kill anything they want. The drop rate for the Phasing Device seems pretty high, and it shouldn’t take more than a few kills to get one.

These guys eat Moonfire for breakfast! Activate your Phasing Device, the world will go all blue and wibbly-wobbly, similar to the effect experienced by Mages when they cast Invisibility. At this point, all the Ethereal mobs will disappear, and you’ll be able to see small glowing cubes called [Smuggled Mana Cell]. The objective of this quest is to collect 10 of these cubes, but the spawn point for each is guarded by one or more Phase Wyrms. As with most collect quests of this nature, it can be very frustrating to be clearing the mob guarding a Mana Cell only to have another player come in and nab the item for himself. Luckily, I’ve discovered a foolproof technique for protecting yourself from these shenanigans! To easily and efficiently collect your 10 Mana Cells:

  1. Shapeshift into Flight Form.
  2. Fly up a little ways so that you’re outside the aggro range of the Wyrms but can still see the box spawn points.
  3. When you find an unclaimed Mana Cell, fly down directly on top of it. Chances are, you’ll aggro its guardian Phase Wyrm.
  4. Cast Cyclone on the Wyrm. As it’s casting, spin your camera so that your cursor turns into the gold activation cog over the Mana Cell.
  5. As soon as your Cyclone goes off, ctrl+right click on the Mana Cell (or whatever key combination you have specified for auto-loot). The Wyrm should just break free a second or two after you’ve acquired the Mana Cell.
  6. Kill the Wyrm and repeat. Note: Should you die while collecting, you’ll lose your Phasing Device and have to acquire a new one!

Using this technique, it’s practically impossible to be "scooped" by another player, making what might otherwise be a frustrating and odious quest (especially for Restoration Druids) a quick and easy way to acquire a bag of [Shattered Sun Supplies]! And remember, always use your powers for good, not evil; don’t take Mana Cells from other players. The QQ in the official forums has finally subsided to the merest trickle of tears. Let’s not garner any further ill will from the lesser classes!

For a more extensive write-up on the Daily Quests in 2.4, I invite you to read Part 1 of the new series that my friend Runycat from Unbearably HoT is working on!

there are several camps of the etheral mobs that drop the quest item among the crystal fields east of bashir’s landing. pick up your phasing device over there and avoid the crowd.

“Should you die …” that’s an obsolete line because resto druids NEVER DIE ^_^

This quest also puts you closer to making a portal from shattrath to the new island. That’s an even better reason for doing it. :P

Hope you don’t mind me linking to this in my MASSIVE QUEST GUIDE OF DOOM. I’m sort of wondering if I should split it up into parts since it’s already a few pages long. x_x

Interestingly enough, I’ve had better drop rates off the Unbound Ethereals. Either way, though, you get the phasing device quick enough.

The mana cells have a far higher respawn time then the mobs… sometimes i get 10 of the cells with only killing a few. i stay always in the same area of sight.

@Thalosar: Agree! I often get all 10 cells from the same 3-4 spawn points with near zero downtime even if someone ninjas 1-2 cells. They respawn so fast. Which is a good thing ’cause the Phasing Device effect gives me an eyestrain headache in a few minutes. My eyes hurt just thinking about it.

The area works off of dynamic spawning, so when it’s crazy — and people are most likely to steal from you — just find a safe spot without many wyrms around, and you’ll often be able to loot the same cube over and over again. My record is 6 cubes in the same spot in a single 90 second period.

Or, you could just root them

@Yakub: Oh … great tip! Thanks!

@Vulpix: Of course we don’t! But … I have heard stories of *some* Resto Druids who have died. Of course, they would have to have been AFK…

@Crythia: Lies! There is no better reason than the chance of getting a Heroic Badge!

@Runycat: TY, Runy. I’ve linked back to your great guide.

@Thalosar: I have noticed with this technique that I a second box usually spawns where the first was looted before I’m able to kill my wyrm. Pretty nice!

@NotAnIssue: The first time the phasing device activated, I found it nauseating myself. I wonder if turning off full screen glow effects or death effects would be helpful?

    @Ringo: Ahhh … that’s a great tip.

@Lizard: GOOD POINT. But Cyclone is so much cooler than Root. ;-) However, I will have to try that to see if I like it better!

I just root and insect swarm the wyrms, then loot the box and finish off the mob, works every time, and the longer duration on roots is something I find nice :)

Living Seed, Replenish, and Gift of the Earthmother (13)

I don’t think viewing living seed as a % of total healing is really the best way to look at it. It’s great for helping a player that is at very low health get back up to very high health and do so quickly. You don’t look at nature’s swiftness as a percentage of overall healing. I don’t think it makes that much sense here either. It’s also a talent that is better when the content is hard, when you have less overhealing. There’s also something...

Kalfurion
Hi Phae, long time no talk. I want to point out that I’m 0/0/71 and I love it. I don’t really find the talents in the balance tree to be that useful for my needs. I’m in a raiding guild as I’m sure you know and the three talents you spoke about suit my needs so well. My rogues, DK’s and our feral druid love me when I keep a rejuv on them for replenish. I’ve joined pugs and people look at my spec and make silly jokes and I don’t know why,...

Kiryn
I really like Replenish, personally. I find myself with far more mana regen than I need in most boss fights, so mana conservation isn’t much of an issue for me. I don’t even know why I carry mana potions if I never use them, and I’m far more likely to be innervating the priests than myself. I often treat rejuv-swiftmend as a near-instant 8k heal on a 15 second cooldown. It isn’t cheap, but it can bring someone back from the brink of death in a little over a second...

Perrin
Phae, One thing that needs to be pointed out clearly to everyone is the misconception about “After spell haste” and the tooltip for GotEM. GotEM removes 0.3 seconds from your GCD. It doesn’t matter if its applied after or before spell haste, because its a factor of the 1.5 BASE GCD. Spell Haste is also a factor of the 1.5 BASE GCD. Therefore they don’t affect each other. The tooltip says 20%, but unlike the usual use of % based talents, the reduction is additive...

@Flynx: Thanks for the link - I’ve added it above to help flesh out the section about GotEM and spell haste! And I’m never sure whether information like this would be better suited to the Healing role forum or the Druid forum. >.< @Pike: I’m glad to hear that you’re still leveling your Druid. I imagine there is a lot of overlap between Hunter fans and Druid fans! (After all, as a Druid, you’re your own pet!) @Pfooti: Thank you! I’m glad you found it...
Guest Post: Leveraging Shadowmeld (22)

Riverwish
As far as i’m aware they changed it so that when you meld in a raid instance you don’t leave combat so you can’t drink/eat or reset pot cooldowns in a raid bossfight, this is why you have to be quite lucky at escaping combat in a raid situation. I did manage to escape for Patchwerk numerous times but other bosses are trickier, I think it depends really on who your fighting and what room you’re in :) All these things can be done in 5 mans though. Riverwishs...

Vreenash
Thanks for posting this up Phae :) Keep the ideas flowing guys. It’s good to hear the different ideas and situations you’ve all been using shadowmeld in. Here’s another one for you: While leveling my way to 78 (still with the ground mount in northrend), there were quests that required killing a normal mob boss. They were usually in the centre of a town, camp or cave. Instead of killing all the mobs on the way to boss, just mount up and run directly to him....

Bearess
One note about SM that should be brought up. Yes it will bring you out of the fight in a lot of cases, but some bosses can still find you. AOE attacks will bring you out of a SM. So watch that. I learned that the hard way when Instructor Razuvious broke loose, and I skittered off a corner and SM. His next “victim” was too close to me when he let out his “Distrupting Shout” and I became next on his list. Figured I’d drop a line since it is a weakness to SM...

Arcaedus
Great info! I’ve often used SM to get out of combat when soloing but have put it to limited use in the instance/raid environment. @Riverwish: I’m not sure that you have to be the last player alive/targetable. I’ve had both successful and unsuccessful attempts with SM hiding on a wipe. My main example is on Patchwork. When multiple tanks go down and its a sure wipe, you are able to run behind one of the pillars and meld. As long as no one drags Patchy to you he should...

Ever since I came back 1/2 year ago from a forced 2-year hiatus from WoW, I’ve been frequenting your blog. You’ve provided us with a wealth of great information and analysis. Thanks to you, my Grid actually gives me useful information beyond how much healing I need to pour into the box. Also, your comments on the Belkin Nostromo N52 TE got me interested enough to try one out for myself. So far, it has improved my healing response time and even saved my groups from a few...
