I hate them. Which is why I haven’t written about them before now. Maybe it’s their non-traditional effects or the fact that many of them are triggered (which means you have to remember to trigger them). Either way, there’s never been a clear best-of-breed pair of trinkets to me. So I collect them and then I put them in the bank, waiting for the day that another Druid blogger will write this article so I can gleefully dust off the pair she’s enthusiastically endorsed. Right now I’d like to take the opportunity to say that the rest of you Restos are slackers for making me do this. I hate trinkets!
The trinkets I’m going to be looking at are the Eye of Gruul, Fel Reaver’s Piston, the Lower City Prayerbook, Essence of the Martyr, Living Root of the Wildheart, the Ribbon of Sacrifice, Bangle of Endless Blessings, Scarab of the Infinite Cycle, the Alchemist’s Stone, the Pendant of the Violet Eye, and the Darkmoon Card: Blue Dragon.
| Name and Source | Passive Effect | Active Effect or Proc | Notes | |
|
|
[Alchemist's Stone] Crafted Requires Alchemy (350) |
15 Intellect, 15 Spirit, 15 Stamina | Equip: Increases the effect that healing and mana potions have on the wearer by 40%. | To find the value of this trinket, I summed the MP5 values for its Intellect and Spirit with the average MP5 values of various potions. |
|
|
[Bangle of Endless Blessings] Warp Splinter Botanica |
Equip: Your spell casts have a chance to allow 15% of your mana regeneration to continue while casting for 15 sec. | Use: Increases your Spirit by 130 for 20 sec. (2 Min Cooldown) | This was the most complicated trinket to analyze since its value is dependent upon cast frequency, whether you have Living Spirit, your base Spirit, and the use of Innervate once every 6 minutes. Please see the graph at the bottom of this article for more information. |
|
|
[Battlemaster's Perseverance] 75 Heroic Badges |
Equip: Increases healing done by up to 88 and damage done by up to 30 for all magical spells and effects. | Use: Increases maximum health by 1750 for 15 sec. Shares cooldown with other Battlemaster’s trinkets. (3 Min Cooldown) | It is difficult to place a value on the on-use effect of this trinket. Its rank relative to the others in this list is subject to the dynamics of an individual encounter. Obviously, if you would have otherwise died, it is the best trinket to have used. |
|
|
[Darkmoon Card: Blue Dragon] Deck of Beasts Darkmoon Faire |
— | Equip: 2% chance on successful spellcast to allow 100% of your Mana regeneration to continue while casting for 15 sec. | MP5 value varies widely on caster Spirit. At 400 Spirit and 3 sec casting time, BD is worth 16.5 MP5. At 700 Spirit and 2 sec casting time, BD is worth 39.5 MP5. See below for graph. |
|
|
[Essence of the Martyr] Heroic Badge Reward |
Equip: Increases healing done by up to 84 and damage done by up to 28 for all magical spells and effects. | Use: Increases healing done by spells by up to 297 and damage done by spells by up to 99 for 20 sec. (2 Min Cooldown) | (20sec/2min * 207) + 84 = 118.5 +Healing on average |
|
|
[Eye of Gruul] Gruul the Dragonkiller Gruul’s Lair |
Equip: Increases healing done by up to 44 and damage done by up to 15 for all magical spells and effects. | Equip: Each healing spell you cast has a 2% chance to make your next heal cast within 15 sec cost 450 less mana. | This trinket can be considered to proc a free Rejuvenation (the most efficient use of its proc) 2% of the time. So, 2% of the time, you will get an extra 415 mana “back” in caster form (332 mana in Tree of Life). This works out to 20.75 MP5 in caster form or 16.6 MP5 in Tree of Life. At a casting rate of once every 3 seconds, it works out to 13.8 MP5 in caster form or 11.01 MP5 in Tree of Life. |
|
|
[Fel Reaver's Piston] Void Reaver Tempest Keep |
Equip: Restores 16 mana per 5 sec. | Equip: Your direct healing spells have a chance to place a heal over time on your target, healing 500 over 12 sec. | As this trinket’s effect only procs from direct heals, I consider its value to only be the 16 MP5. |
|
|
[Living Root of the Wildheart] Hydross the Unstable Serpentshrine Caverns |
— | Equip: Procs [Sylvan Blessing] in Tree Form and [Cenarion Blessing] in caster form. | At a cast rate of once every 2 sec, the proc will be active 20% of the time. At a rate of once every 3 sec, the proc will be active 14.1% of the time. The effects are different for caster vs. Tree of Life. Caster @ 2 sec = 35.7 +Healing. Caster @ 3 sec = 24.7 +Healing. Tree @ 2 sec = 66.6 +Healing. Tree @ 3 sec = 46.1 +Healing. |
|
|
[Lower City Prayerbook] Lower City Revered |
Equip: Increases healing done by up to 70 and damage done by up to 24 for all magical spells and effects. | Use: Your heals each cost 22 less mana for the next 15 sec. (1 Min Cooldown) | If used every cooldown and assuming a cast rate of once every 2 seconds, this trinket is worth 22 mana every 2 seconds … 25% of the time. This works out to 13.75 MP5. At a cast rate of once every 3 seconds, it’s worth 9.2 MP5. |
|
|
[Memento of Tyrande] Illidan Stormrage Black Temple |
Equip: Increases healing done by up to 118 and damage done by up to 40 for all magical spells and effects. | Equip: Each time you cast a spell, there is chance you will gain up to 76 mana per 5 for 15 sec. | As with the Bangle, the buff from this trinket should be up an average of 23% of the time, making its average MP5 work out to 17.48 at a cast time of 2.0, 15.2 at a cast time of 3.0. |
|
|
[Pendant of the Violet Eye] Shade of Aran Karazhan |
40 Intellect | Use: Each spell cast within 20 seconds will grant a stacking bonus of 21 mana regen per 5 sec. Expires after 20 seconds. Abilities with no mana cost will not trigger this trinket. (2 Min Cooldown) | I found the average mana regeneration during the 20 seconds the buff is active based upon casting speed. This value can be summed with the MP5 equivalent of the passive 40 Intellect. Final results were 24.38 MP5 @ 2 sec and 18.58 MP5 @ 3 sec. |
|
|
[Rejuvenating Gem] Blackwing Lair |
Equip: Increases healing done by up to 66 and damage done by up to 22 for all magical spells and effects. Restores 9 mana per 5 sec. | — | Included for completeness, if you don’t already have this trinket, you aren’t likely to acquire it. |
|
|
[Ribbon of Sacrifice] Opera Event Karazhan |
Equip: Increases healing done by up to 73 and damage done by up to 25 for all magical spells and effects. | Use: For the next 20 sec, your direct heals grant Fecundity to your target, increasing the healing received by the target by up to 30. Fecundity lasts 10 sec and stacks up to 5 times. (2 Min Cooldown) | Unless you’re using Healing Touch extensively (as with a Dreamstate build), this trinket’s on use effect holds little value. |
|
|
[Scarab of the Infinite Cycle] Aeonus Black Morass |
Equip: Increases healing done by up to 70 and damage done by up to 24 for all magical spells and effects. | Equip: Your direct healing and heal over time spells have a chance to increase your spell haste rating by 320 for 6 secs. | HoTs do not benefit from the spell haste procced by this trinket. |
|
|
[Figurine - Talasite Owl] 370 Jewelcrafting |
Equip: Restores 14 mana per 5 sec. | Use: Restores 900 mana over 12 sec. (5 Min Cooldown) | The MP5 on-use effect of this trinket averages out to 15 MP5 (900/(5*60/5)), bringing its total MP5 value to 29. |
|
|
[Tome of Diabolic Remedy] Hex Lord Malacrass Zul’Aman |
Equip: Restores 18 mana per 5 sec. | Use: Increases healing done by spells by up to 396 and damage done by spells by up to 132 for 20 sec. (2 Min Cooldown) | The +Healing on-use effect of this trinket averages out to 66 +Healing. |
|
|
[Warp Scarab Brooch] Nexus-Prince Shaffnar Mana-Tombs (Heroic) |
Equip: Restores 13 mana per 5 sec. | Use: Increases healing done by spells and effects by up to 282 and damage done by spells by up to 94 for 20 sec. (2 Min Cooldown) | The +Healing on-use effect of this trinket averages out to 47 +Healing. |
Prioritizing
From these summarized values and excluding those trinkets irrelevant to the Druid HoT-based style of healing, I would personally prioritize these trinkets in the following way:
| Rank | Trinket | Value |
| 1. | [Bangle of Endless Blessings] | “Endless” is right! I tried to summarize the sheer awesomeness of this trinket and my table exploded! Please see the addendum at the bottom of this post for math, graphs, and pretty-colored lines. |
| 2. | [Alchemist's Stone] | 15 Stamina AND 69.25 MP5 when used with [Major Dreamless Sleep Potion] 62.55 MP5 when used with [Fel Mana Potion] 49.25 MP5 when used with [Super Mana Potion] 42.6 MP5 when used with [Mad Alchemist Potion] |
| 3. | [Memento of Tyrande] | 118 +Healing AND 17.48 MP5 @ 2 sec 15.2 MP5 @ 2 sec |
| 4. | [Eye of Gruul] | 44 +Healing AND 20.75 MP5 in caster @ 2 sec 16.6 MP5 in Tree @ 2 sec 13.8 MP5 in caster @ 3 sec 11.01 MP5 in Tree @ 3 sec |
| 5. | [Tome of Diabolic Remedy] | 66 +Healing AND 18 MP5 |
| 6. | [Darkmoon Card: Blue Dragon]* |
16.5 MP5 @ 400 SPI and 3 sec 39.5 MP5 @ 700 SPI and 2 sec |
| 7. | [Figurine - Talasite Owl]* | 29 MP5 |
| 8. | [Pendant of the Violet Eye]* | 24.38 MP5 @ 2 sec 18.58 MP5 @ 3 sec |
| 9. | [Lower City Prayerbook]* | 70 +Healing AND 13.75 MP5 @ 2 sec 9.2 MP5 @ 3 sec |
| 10. | [Rejuvenating Gem] | 66 +Healing AND 9 MP5 |
| 11. | [Essence of the Martyr] | 118.5 +Healing on average |
| 12. | [Warp Scarab Brooch] | 47 +Healing AND 13 MP5 |
| 13. | [Living Root of the Wildheart] |
35.7 +Healing in caster @ 2 sec 66.6 +Healing in Tree @ 2 sec 24.7 +Healing in caster @ 3 sec 46.1 +Healing in Tree @ 3 sec |
* The differences between these are marginal and largely dependent upon external factors such as cast speed. Use your best judgment.
Without a doubt, the Bangle comes out on top. It simply blows all the others away. I was shocked to discover this, especially considering that it’s a blue item from a non-Heroic instance. A significant portion of its value comes from its use in conjunction with Innervate, so if you aren’t already doing this … well, I can’t believe you’re reading Resto4Life and not already doing this! I’m strongly considering a follow-up piece to this one that looks at the Bangle in more depth .. and I suspect I may not have a choice in the matter once the incredulous comments start.
Math
Because not everyone likes math, I’ve separated it out from the comparison portion. Here are some of the fundamentals used to determine the values of these trinkets:
Proc to Restore Mana
The formula to determine the MP5 value of an item that procs a mana restore a certain % of the time is as follows:
MP5 = 5 * (mana restored / (cast frequency/proc rate))
This formula can be applied to the [Eye of Gruul] and applied toward the 415 mana cost of a Rejuvenation when in caster form:
MP5 = 5 * (415 / (2/0.02)) = 20.75
Proc Duration for Items without an Internal Cooldown
The formula to determine the proc duration (in %time) for an item without an internal cooldown is as follows:
t% = 1 - (1 - proc rate)^(duration of buff/casting frequency)
We can apply this formula to the [Living Root of the Wild Heart] (3% proc rate with a proc duration of 15 seconds). This works out to (1 - (1 - 0.03)^(15/2) or 20% of the time, assuming a cast rate of 2.0 seconds. At a cast rate of 3.0 seconds, it drops to 14.1% of the time.
Applying this formula to the [Darkmoon Card: Blue Dragon] (2% chance with a proc duration of 15 seconds), we find that the buff should be active (1 - (1 - 0.02)^15/2) or 14% of the time at a cast rate of 2.0 seconds. At a cast rate of 3.0 seconds, this buff should be active 9.6% of the time. I found the additional 70% mana regeneration provided by the Dragon card when the proc was up (100% - 30% from Intensity) and discarded the at least 5.56% of the time you’d be likely to be under the effects of an Innervate. I then graphed the contribution of the Dragon Card to your mana regeneration at values of Spirit ranging from 300-700:

Proc Frequency for Items with an Internal Cooldown
The formula to determine the proc rate (measured in PPM) for an item with an internal cooldown is as follows:
PPM = 60 / ((casting frequency/proc rate) + internal cooldown)
We can apply this formula to the [Bangle of Endless Blessings]. With a 10% proc rate and 45 second internal cooldown, the Bangle would have an average PPM of 60 / ((2/0.1) + 45) or 0.92 PPM, assuming a cast rate of 2.0 seconds. At a cast rate of 3.0 seconds, the PPM would drop to 0.8 PPM. So that we can reuse the method used to determine the MP5 value at varying levels of Spirit for the Blue Dragon, we need to convert PPM into the percent of time that the buff will be active. This formula is simply:
%t = (duration * PPM) / 60
With a 15 second duration and cast frequency of 2.0 seconds, the percent time this buff will be active is 23%. With a casting time of 3.0 seconds, 20%. As with the Blue Dragon, the proc is worthless to us while under the effects of Innervate, so we have to exclude its benefits by multiplying what it gives by (1 - 20/360) or 94%. Graphed against values of Spirit ranging from 300-700:

Of course, the world would be too simple a place if this were the only component involved in determining the value of the Bangle. We also have to take into consideration its on use effect, twice without Innervate and once with Innervate. Luckily, this calculation isn’t too heinous since it’s a flat Spirit bonus of 130 for 15 seconds (149.5 if you have Living Spirit). We can determine the value of a tick of Spirit-based mana regeneration with the following formula:
MP5Spirit = SPI/4.5 * 5/2
We then multiply this value by 4 since there are 4 ticks in 20 seconds:
Mana Return = MP5Spirit * 4
And then multiply it again by 0.3 due to Intensity and given the nature of Lifebloom:
Mana Returnin combat = Mana Return * 0.3
So if we plug in 130 for the value of Spirit, we get 86.7 total mana back when used. With Living Spirit, we’d get 99.7 mana back each use. In a six minute period, we’ll include two of those uses and then a third use in conjunction with Innervate:
Mana ReturnInnervate = SPI/4.5 * 5/2 * 4 * 500%
Without Living Spirit this comes out to an additional 1444.4 mana. With Living Spirit, it’s worth 1661.1. To determine the MP5 afforded by this trinket’s on use effect we consider 2 instances of it without Innervate plus one instance of it with then divide the total additional mana return by the number of ticks in 6 minutes:
MP5w/o Living Spirit = (86.7 + 86.7 + 1444.4) / (6*60/5) = 22.5 MP5
MP5w/ Living Spirit = (99.7 + 99.7 + 1661.1) / (6*60/5) = 25.8 MP5
Since the two components rely upon cast frequency, your Spirit total, and Living Spirit, we end up with a range of possible values.

Valuing the [Alchemist's Stone]
Using the analysis from MP5 vs. Intellect and assuming a fight length of 8 minutes and the 10% bonus from Blessing of Kings, 15 Intellect converts to 2.58 MP5. Applying the analysis from MP5 vs. Spirit and assuming Blessing of Kings, Living Spirit, Innervate, and 80% of the time in FSR, the 15 Spirit converts approximately to 6.67 MP5. The MP5 value from stats alone is therefore 6.67 + 2.58 or 9.25 MP5. The MP5 value of its potion augmenting effect will depend upon the type of potion used but can be determined as:
MP5Potion Increase = Avg. Additional Mana Returned/Ticks in 2 Min
Therefore, the additional MP5 contribution for various mana potions will be:
- [Major Dreamless Sleep Potion]: 1440/24 = 60 MP5
- [Fel Mana Potion]: 1280/24 = 53.3 MP5
- [Super Mana Potion]: 960/24 = 40 MP5
- [Mad Alchemist Potion]: 880/24 = 33.3 MP5
By summing the MP5 value of its stats and the MP5 increase for various potions, we arrive at the following values:
- [Major Dreamless Sleep Potion]: 9.25 + 60 = 69.25
- [Fel Mana Potion]: 9.25 + 53.3 = 62.55
- [Super Mana Potion]: 9.25 + 40 = 49.25 MP5
- [Mad Alchemist Potion]: 9.25 + 33.3 = 42.6 MP5
Valuing the [Pendant of the Violet Eye]
As with the Alchemist’s Stone, we can convert the 40 Intellect on this item into MP5. Assuming a fight length of 8 minutes and the 10% bonus from Blessing of Kings, 40 Intellect converts to 6.88 MP5. Since the mana regeneration afforded by each application of the buff within 20 seconds increases in a linear fashion, we can determine the likely number of applications (based on cast frequency) and use the average mana regeneration between the first and last applications:
Avg. MP5 = ((duration/cast frequency) * 21 MP5) / 2
At a cast frequency of once every 2 seconds, the average MP5 value of this trinket while the buff is active would be 105 MP5. At a cast frequency of once every 3 seconds, this value is 70 MP5. If used every cooldown, it is active for 20 seconds out of every 2 minutes or 16.7% of the time. Multiplying this percentage by the MP5 values gives an MP5 of 17.5 with a cast frequency of 2.0 and 11.7 with a cast frequency of 3.0. Adding the MP5 equivalent of its passive +40 Intellect, we arrive at a final value of 24.38 at 2.0 and 18.58 at 3.0.

I really have to come back and read these sorts of posts later, when my mind is free of distractions and can focus on the math a bit more. I used to be good at math, but when I see your posts full of numbers and symbols, my brain just completely gives up.
But I want to learn how it all works, and someday I will come back and do so, so thank you in advance!
I don’t suppose I could convince you to add the Alchemist’s Stone (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=13503) to your list for us alchemists?
Of course, it’s another one that’s a pain to deal with, because it matters what type of potion you chug and how often you do it.. plus there’s the whole issue of it giving a little bit of both spirit and int rather than a fair amount of one, easy-to-deal with stat like +healing… yeah. Actually, maybe it does only belong down here in the comments. Still shiny if you have access to it, though.
I have the bangle (resto druid doing kara mostly), but also have the Pendant of the Violet Eye, which displaced it. The +40 int on the Pendant is a nice boost to the mana pool, but I would love to hear someone compare the mana regen of the Pendant against the Bangle…
I like my Auslese’s light channeler that I got from the blood furnance at lvl 61 and for a while had two equipped because I had two before Patch 2.1 took effect and made it unique. I still use one atm while I am working up for a better one.

Concerning the Eye of Gruul:
Did you calculate it’s MP5-value by casting a “free” rejuvenation every time it procs or did you consider missing the buff and casting a lifebloom instead? Or did I miss it? Because if you miss the buff and cast a lifebloom instead, your saved mana would be quite less, wouldn’t it?
And while it sure is great to be able to cast that free rejuvenation every time it procs, I find it way to troublesome having to watch for that buff. In raids 90% or more of my healing done comes from lifebloom. If I had this trinket and wanted to use it effectively, I would need to change my spell rotation depending on it. I can already see it proc just as I need to refresh my lifebloom stack on our main tank
That would annoy me to no end.
Bangle of Endless Blessing:
It never dropped for me and never bothered to farm it. Do I understand it correctly, that you use innervate on yourself in all your calculations concerning this trinket? If so, how much less Mp5 would it give me if I gave my innervate to another player? (I do this in most fights)
Nice write up, tho i might want to add some stuff.
1st of all it would be nice to see how the ZA healing trinket(18mp5/396heal on use) fits in there.
i can consider myself lucky as i basicly own all of those trinkets, pre LB nerf i was mostly using ZA+essence of martyr for the pure rolling LB power( ticking for over 950)
At a certain gear level, which i can be lucky to have, you just have enough manareg. Even on fights like Gurtokk Blooboil, which i consider the most mana
dependant fight for a healer in this game, i have more th n enough, not even having Tree form anymore.
At this point,+heal is the stat you need to focus on. I wasnt lucky enough to get the illidan trinket, so basicly i am using Essence of Martyr+Lower City Prayerbook(even considering to use the battlemaster +88heal trinket) to squeeze out as much +heal as possible to get your LB´s as high as it gets.
So basicly, once you get access so T6 level-like gear, imo +heal is the way to go. Atm i have mostly gemmed with 11heal 2mp5 gems, but only due to the absolute lack of Crimosn Spinels in our guild. Once that gets solved, i will basicly socket all +22 heal, +26heal meta and rest gems to make meta work

@Nasirah: To be honest, I struggle with the math myself sometimes, too. Luckily Mr. Phae has taken a ton of math classes (taught himself Calculus II and III a couple of summers ago), so he’s a tremendous asset. I tell him that he’s blogging vicariously through me.
@Adremma: I’ve added the Alchemist’s Stone. WOW! It’s pretty amazing. If I weren’t already so heavily vested (haha - get it?) in Leatherworking, I’d drop it to pick up Alchemy. That item … wow. Thanks for suggesting it!
@Roky: Don’t displace your Bangle. The Pendant is right around the middle of the pack. Not terrible by any means, but no where on par with the value you should be getting from your Bangle. (See the section above on valuing the Pendant.)
@Auryann: I didn’t include the weaker +Healing trinkets since you ought to at least be replacing that with an Essence of the Martyr from Heroic badges. Snap to! =)
@Kuhbi: I did calculate its MP5 by casting free Rejuvenations. It’s the most efficient use of the free 450 mana, and I figure you can always find someone who could use it. I realize that it may not be a perfect assumption since sometimes you can’t afford to allow a LB to slip, but these were generally calculated under “best case” scenarios.
As for having difficulty watching for it, you might look at finding an addon that shows text over your head (like Scrolling Combat Text) or maybe even one that would play a sound based on buffs. Wow, that sounds really handy. I should look for that, too!! =)
Get thee to Botanica now, sir! Every Druid should have a Bangle of Endless Blessings. It’s just amazingly delicious for Innervates. It would give you substantially less mana back if you didn’t include the use of Innervate on yourself … I’m guessing around 24-30% less.
@Ammeli: Thank you for the feedback! Having not experienced endgame content myself, I’ve not run into the mana regeneration plateau that I understand is par for the course. I hope that someday I’ll be at a point where I can apply your suggestions to stack +Healing. For now, though, I need to focus especially on my Spirit. With the changes in 2.3, wearing Arena gear (which I do in two slots) became much less attractive since Spirit because more valuable relative to MP5. Thanks very much, Amy! =)
A note about the ribbon:
Its effect can also be activated by regrowth and swiftmend. It’s best used right before a NS + HT, if it’s all you have on you
Nice article. As I am a very very lazy tree I use the arena trinket ( 88 +heal) and the essence of the martyr.
I do not know if that is better though. We are doing SSC/TK now and everywhere I looked all druids have this trinket combo.
I have like 450 Spirit unbuffed and was told by a druid from a top European guild that it is way too much.
I’m snapping…just slowly.
You forgot the Warp-Scarab Brooch and it’s epic counter part, Tome of Diabolic Remedy.
I like the math break downs thouge.
I also would like to talk about the proc rate on Living Root of the Wildheart. It finally dropped off Hydross and i won it. I felt like trying it out. We then went on to clear Lurker trash and with keeping 3 lifebloom rolls on the tanks and throwing lifeblooms around others, it only proced every other trash pull. I got to the last group and switched back to the Prayerbook. It is now in my bank under my dps feral set (i didn’t have any second trinket for that set anyway =P).
For bangle when i actually use it, i just hit the Use everytime the Proc gose up as i have said before. Makes for a more consistant regen than innervate and the CD isen’t all that long so if your mana is going down fast you can anticipate ahead of time when you will need innervate anyway.
Something alarming in the fact that 2 of the best healing trikets in the game are a 60 epic and a 70 blue…..
I recently replaced Bangle with Tome of Diabolic Remedy. I am thinking about switching back since the trinket + LB nerf. I’ve been too lazy to do the math on it.
My second trinket is the BWL Rejuvenating Gem. I have done the math there and since its all passive imo it just can’t be beat. I have never been a fan of activated trinkets aside from bangle because its just so good.
I am curious on the comparison between Tome and Bangle, looks like I’ll be doing the math myself
In general Use trinkets are not really for tree druids. I dont care for them in the healing department. After this recent trinket nurfix i intend to change gears and draw more worth out of the mana regen trinkets than the healing ones and put more healing in my other gear.
The stacking lifebloom ‘nerf’ sure changed things.
If you are looking to stack healing with your trinkets, I’d add Battlemaster’s Perseverance to the list (it can be bought with badges). It has a nice heal and the on use effectively acts as a second (temporary) healthstone on a separate cooldown. With it and the Essence of the Martyr you’re getting a pretty decent boost to healing.
I keep mp/5 trinkets around, but on fights where I don’t need the extra regen (which is most of them these days) I prefer to get the extra healing, so I go with those two.
I’d second the reccomendation for the Rejuvinating Gem though. We cleared BWL for amusement over Christmas and it dropped off of Firemaw, and of course I lost the roll.
What a great article, thx for the math.
I got my own idea about the trinket, I thought the Tyrande’s memento and Alchemist’s stone is the best combination. For high-end gears and encounters,mp5 even more important than healing powers.
Potions is the best mana regen way 0.0…..
Really nice Phae. Once again you made my day
(slow day at work…)
I am lucky to have most of them and mix and match according to fight. Since I usually find myself in the caster group, which includes either a shadow priest (vampiric embrace) or a shammy (mana tide), I use the prayer book and the essence of the martyr as my main gear for that extra kick in healing output.
In case I need mana fast (eg in Hex Lord Malacrass), I use the bangle instead of the book and I get around 8k mana from Innervates bringing me back to full mana from almost oom.
Fianlly, I find the Blue Dragon card to be a huge waste of money, since it is easily comparable to other ones that are actually “free”.
Nice article and it confirms what I was already thinking. I stack +heal on everything including gems and leave my trinket slots to manage mana regen. I raid with Bangle + Alchy stone and it works pretty well so far. Your previous article on maximizing innervate has been helpful as I have picked up a Nightbane staff for swapping. I just need to find a chanter who can put +20 Spirit on it.
You’re missing the Battlemaster and Memento! Both should be considered up there, with Memento on top and Battlemaster fighting it out for 3rd to 4th (the on use helps at any level of content.)
As for the math. Your analysis weighs heavily in favor of regen trinkets. The only issue with this is when your regen is fine. Essence and Memento should be the top 2 trinkets to effect our healing (+heal being the most important stat when regen is fine), with the ZA trinket close behind and the Lower City Prayerbook tied. (The difference between the averaged +heal from the ZA trinket and the mana/5 is small.)
Good write up for those considering trinkets, but too much focus on the regen aspect. There is no prize for having more mana at the end of a fight.
Sorry for my bad english!
I’m from Germany.
What I want to say:
Ribbon of Sacrifice can stack!
So if two or three or more healers activate this trinket at the same time it is a huge benefit.
I’ve instructed my guild’s druids to track down the following 5 trinkets for PvE
Essence of the Martyr (+heal)
Battlemaster’s Perseverance (+heal, survivability)
Bangle of Endless Blessings (mana)
Medallion of the Horde (survivability)
Lower City Prayerbook (+heal, mana hybrid)
These five cover any possible combination of trinkets for the appropriate boss fight. Traditional “max +heal” is best served by Essence & Battlemaster’s. Maximizing mana is Prayerbook + the bangle. For boss fights I recommend the Battlemaster’s & Bangle as the on-use to heal yourself is FAR more helpful than the +heal boost from the Essence. Finally the PvP trinket is very necessary on at least two fights in MH (Rage & Arch)
@Noressa: while I’d actually consider the MT going “holy %#&$, healer mana” at the end of a long fight a fair prize in itself, I guess not everyone will. Consider, though:
* Most people, starting out with raiding, have more of a problem with running out of mana than they do with just not being able to put out enough healing, at least in my experience. It’s easier to get these people more regen than it is to teach them why, when, and how to downrank. Especially when we’re talking about druids, with a lifebloom that only /has/ one rank
* At the point one starts to be a bit overgeared for a dungeon, stacking more regen is more likely to let one use fewer and cheaper potions, which has to be viewed as a plus. This is, perhaps, trickier if you like the Alchemist’s Stone as much as I do, but that’s what the “cheaper” option is for.
* Finally, if you’re at the point where your regen lets you use no potions at all, or the content you’re doing means you can’t possibly get to that point–and especially if you have access to the Memento of Tyrande (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32496) in the first place–you probably don’t need a guide to help you with your trinket selection
I agree with Noressa in that you tend to overvalue regen and undervalue +heal. The regen on instance appropriate gear always more than covered my regen if I used mana pots appropriately. Saying that you can avoid using mana pots by doing less healing means that you’re hurting your raid in the long run. Does that mean they could have gotten by with one less healer? Is it ok if your dps puts out less than their max DPS by not potting?
Obviously I’m in a fairly progression oriented guild but I get frustrated by resto druids who think it’s appropriate to heal less than they can, they’re the same people running around calling us backup healers.
In my opinion, Momento of Tyrande + EotM is your end-game trinket combination of choice with LCPB taking Momento’s place until you have access to it.
Adremma, I guess my contention is we should be using mana pots, we shouldn’t be downranking anything.
The reason I put something here is that this is a place a lot of druids will go to look for healing, it’s linked fairly regularly. I don’t want them to think that the best they have to look forward to is regen trinkets above everything! Since this is a guide, and a popular one, it should have (in my opinion) the views for multi-tiered levels of raiding. Just because at early levels they’re OMG, amazing doesn’t mean that progression will change it.
I’m just tired of trees telling me I should be equipping bangle over my battlemaster or ZA trinket. :p Yes, regen helps to some level, but with the low cost and upkeep of our spells, there’s no reason to avoid the other amazing healing trinkets.
And all the druids who are maxing spirit at the cost of their healing.
Thank you all for commenting! Please understand that I wrote this and performed this analysis based on my own experiences that have lead me to value MP5 more highly than Healing. I can completely understand that, at the furthest reaches of the endgame, this paradigm changes. And oh how I envy that paradigm shift! =) Nonetheless, I hope that at the very least, the math presented here can help those of you at the later stages of the game value your trinkets according to your own needs. If nothing else, knowing how procs break down and what the average contribution will end up being should help you make your own ordered list of priorities (I hope).
At your requests, I’ve added the Memento of Tyrande, Rejuvenating Gem, Tome of Diabolic Remedy, and Warp Scarab Brooch. I did not include the Battlemaster’s Perserverance due to its value being so subjective to a given encounter. Please feel free to insert that one at your own discretion. As for why these trinkets weren’t here in the first place, I was given a list of trinkets that someone was considering. I analyzed these plus a couple I knew about from personal experience. Obviously, I will not be “experiencing” the Memento of Tyrande any time soon.
Re: Ribbon of Sacrifice. While the effect of this trinket may stack, it won’t get stacked by me with my non-direct Heals. I will encourage everyone else to use it, though!
@Pyxis: My emphasis on mana regeneration stems not from a desire to do “less” but from a desire to do “more”. I found myself over and over running out of mana from healing what was perhaps more than my fair share (in a 10-man raid, I am often 45% of the total healing; in a 25-man, I often exceed the next highest healer by 5-10%). As I could not seem to break my compulsion to “omg Lifebloom OMG LIFEBLOOM OMGOMG LIFEBLOOM EVERYBODY”, I opted for more mana regeneration. It has worked out for me so far, but then again I don’t have a tremendous number of options in terms of what gear is available to me.
Thanks for adding them!
I still don’t agree with the focus on regen over +heal, however it’s definitely nice to have out there as a quick reference for people. I know not everyone has access to all the trinkets at the start, but as a quick guide with a good summary, this rocks.
Noressa, notice I only mention using fewer pots in conjunction with being overgeared–if there’s any question at all, it’s chugging time. Similarly, downranking is only for having tons of +healing and not enough regen, and you actually seem to agree the right solution is getting enough regen rather than trying to teach someone to downrank properly (I don’t think I know, and thus I don’t do it).
What it comes down to, I guess, is that with a couple of Wowhead searches I can easily know what gear is the next upgrade in terms of +healing. However, I have yet to see a similar filter for “helps resto druids with mana regen”; even searches on obvious ways to improve that miss some things, it seems. (An unusual case, to be sure, but what’s missing from http://www.wowhead.com/?items=4.-4&filter=cr=24;crs=1;crv=0 ?)
Oh, while I’m poking at Wowhead, another pair of pure-regen trinkets:
Figurine - Talasite Owl (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24127) for the Jewelcrafters out there
Warmth of Forgiveness (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=23027) is another completeness-factor one, as it’s from Naxx, but it would otherwise make the chart
Ah, yeah. I take it for granted that during my work hours, I’m blessed with time to check the Druid Forums and the EJ forums for druid issues and concerns. There’s been a lot of discussion there in regards to trinkets, the breakdowns and different uses. (2 threads devoted to trees, 1 to trinkets in general.) Not everyone would have seen those threads, which is in large part why I’m glad this is here. I see this forum linked in the druid threads more often then EJ.
As for downranking, it’s just silly. >.> I know some people downrank regrow, but that’s just not something I could ever get into. =/
@Phalea Dosent every tree have the compulsion to lifebloom everything in sight? hehe. They ushualy have to drag me away from the lifebloom button kicking and screaming “HAHA! LIFEBLOOM! LIFEBLOOM LIFEBLOOM!!!”. Castable healing? BAH! ONLY THE ACURSSED GLOBAL COOLDOWN CAN RESTRAIN US FROM WORLD HEALING DOMINTATION AHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!
Thanks for this article
For anyone that doesn’t have the Bangle, you can stealth through and just kill Warpsplinter with 4-5 and it only takes 15-20 minutes (even on heroic).
Well since I saw the rejuvenating gem from BWL up there, you might want to add the Eye of the Dead as well from Naxx, which has the biggest on use heal modifier in game and a really nice passive one.
Could be still one of the best healing trinkets, but once again, if you do not have it yet, you’ll prolly never get it. NAXX? Yeah right
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=23047
Bleh, Blue Dragon isn’t as good as I thought it would be, oh well. At least it’s one of the few trinkets that requires minimal thought and scales with gear (which makes it pretty awesome).. and I haven’t had a chance to step into Bot yet for my Bangle. Thanks for the info and keep it coming!
I’ve added the Talasite Owl. Thank you for reminding me of that one! With that, I think I’m done adding trinkets to this article. A Naxx trinket certainly isn’t likely to be picked up at this point in the game.
@Zackoria: The comment about GCD and World Healing Domination is win! I had to read that to Mr. Phae on the ride home from work yesterday.
@Noressa ~ Ouch a stab at us who stack spirit! I realize its the minority way to play. I do it since I am THE +spirit tree in my guild. The rest of the forest more appropriately stacks +heal. I do not yet feel horribly out healed by my fellow trees, in fact, I frequently out heal them, so I will keep stacking my spirit for now.
I try to sacrifice raw mp5 instead of sacrificing +heal in favor of more spirit, making BoEB indispensable and my number one favorite piece of gear. I just wish it was purple to better reflect its awesomeness in the branches of druid!
While this is a fine looking chart and all, I seriously think you are undervaluing Healing when compared to MP5. The simple fact is that once you have a decent amount of MP5 (~160 ), Healing allows you do more with less casting since everything ticks harder. I see a lot of people stacking MP5 and Spirit pretty heavily on Druids, and they find themselves blowing a lot of cooldowns, chain potting, planning Innervates in advance, and being stressed when they can not keep a tank topped off from the simple fact that the HOTs are weak. From reading your posts here for months, this is exactly what it sounds like you may be doing. You only get to cast 1 spel every GCD so it might as well heal for as much as possible. Its not just an end game thing, for Resto Druids (and especially Trees) Healing should be the primary stat.
Also, there is no way the Eye of Gruul should be rated higher than the Tome of Diabolic Remedy. The situations that need to occur for the Eye to have more MP5 almost never happen.
Can you post a gear list of what you wear for PVE? Even an Armory link with PVE gear on would be good.
/agree Brian but it is always a matter of circumstances. Meaning that what is adequate for one fight might not be for another (both boss-wise and raid composition-wise)
2.3 buffed our MP5 by a lot, leaving the fights as they were. This means that we can invest more item stats on +healing and yet maintain the appropriate levels in MP5.
Again though, what is enough for you is a matter of many more things like play style.
If you find yourself oom a lot at the end of fights then get some mp5/spirit or sort your mana regen strategy. If you find your healing target losing HP fast, then stack a bit more +heal.
But this is another matter analyzed by Phae in other topics. Look them up. They are quite interesting.
Dear Tree,
what about old Argent Dawn Talisman of Ascendance?
Thx in advance,
Neve
@Nevelatte: At this point, I’m not looking to add any more trinkets to this analysis. The changes coming in 2.4 will likely require a revaluation of each of the ones listed above anyway.
Ty!
Will not Blue dragon card be > all in 2.4 when it comes to mana regen.
LB spamer as we are, we get it to proc 2 times every 150 sec. 15 sec proc -> 3 ticks, in 2.4 my ticks will be above 800, take away the mp5 and you will get 500-600 mp5. That would mean that it will regen 1500 mana, take away 30% and you get a 1k mana per proc back. It will proc once every 75 sec; that would give us around 70MP5. Dont know if im calculating it right tho.
@Razulath: Yes, I think the Blue Dragon will be an amazing regeneration trinket come 2.4 (and I still can’t get my Ace - arrghh!). I plan on doing some math behind it soon.
Hi there,
Being an avid lurker on Resto4Life, I’ve finally taken the plunge into commenting. I was wondering whether you’ve had a look at the Redeemer’s Alchemist Stone that can be crafted since patch 2.4 and where it would fit on your comparison. I’m currently running around with Essence of the Martyr and Bangle of Endless Blessings - but according to your regen calculator the Bangle is overkill. We’re not raiding TK yet, so was curious to know your opinion.
Thanks a million for the informative posts, by the way. It’s helped make me a better resto druid *smiles*
Warm regards
Chaen
Just as a personal opinion:
Use + innervate on the Bangle of Endless Blessings is now massive, massive overkill; innervate without the trinket still restores far more mana than I can have, and I can’t cast fast enough to use up that extra while it’s going. Naturally, this won’t be true for everyone, and the Bangle is still useful for mana both for the proc and for the Use: when *not* innervating (maybe if you pop it during forced downtime during a fight?), but is perhaps overkill for some, especially with the 2.4 regen changes. I’ve switched it out for the Lower City Prayerbook, just for the +healing from that. On the other hand, I’m significantly outgearing the content I’m seeing, and so I’m naturally preferring adding lazy +healing rather than trying to convert more mana to more healing
The Redeemer’s Alchemist Stone, on the other hand… it just wins. +119 healing is, on its own, enough to get the new stone pretty high on the list. The effective mp5 from chain-potting, though (as above, 40mp5 if chain-potting super mana potions), makes the new stone a fierce competitor for Bangle at full benefits. Anything less from Bangle, though, and RAS should be #1 on any alchemist’s chart.
@Chaendryn: I agree with everything Adremma says above. I’m insanely jealous of alchemists and have even considered dropping Leatherworking (worthless) for Alchemy for this reason. I’m so happy you’ve decided to comment. =) Thank you!
@Adremma: Thanks for fielding that for me. =) My friend Korryna (newly minted Resto Druid) just got her SSO Alchemy trinket and Blue Dragon card this week. I’m quite envious!
@Adremma: Thanks a million. I have the same issue with innervate in that I regen more mana than I can have or use effectively. I’m probably way over-geared for the content I’m seeing at present, so will keep it in the bank in case it becomes needed later. Haven’t had to chain-pot either … one innervate and a 10 minute boss fight’s a breeze.
@Phae: Alchemy rocks *chuckles* With the number of elixirs I manufacture for a raid and the pots, it just made perfect sense. The trinket is an added bonus. Another advantage to Alchemy is the Mad Alchemist’s potion - restores the same amount of mana as Super Mana Potion, but also restores the same amount of HP as a Super Healing Potion. So you get both healing and mana from the same pot and one cooldown. Also a much cheaper recipe to make than either of the Super pots listed. The random elixir buff it gives you is always a beneficial one though it does not overwrite the elixir buffs you already have active if you’re used something like Draenaic Wisdom or Super Healing Power.
Will probably make the Sorcerer’s Alchemist Stone for my DPS set as well … what the hell, I like it when mobs die from something more than pure exhaustion when solo’ing. *wanders off muttering about the transmutation cooldown hell*
Alchemist stone could be updated, or add the new healing version of it - http://www.wowhead.com/?item=35754 , which is just… a mind-boggling trinket. I personally use that and the Tome Diabolic Remedy, finding it a solid balance between +heal and regen which each ones ‘use’ (considering mana potting a ‘use’) and passive effects opposite of the other. Now if I could just get my hands on Momento of Tyrande!
@Lhusu: This entire article could really stand to be updated, to be honest, but as much fun as it was to write it the FIRST TIME (not much), I’ve decided that the next trinkets article will be based in WotLK.
In my opinion, the new Alchemy stone is the best regeneration-based trinket in the game. Best of luck picking up a Memento! =)
Found this site from The Druid Wiki site. While I see that this article is somewhat old and 2.4 is out. I had to comment on the Blue Dragon. While it took me 4 months to get (The Beast hates me), my wife is now using this trinket. The last WWS report shows it proccing 22 times in one boss fight. She rarely has to use a pot or innervate. I am simply blown away by this trinket. She has the Bangle but it mostly sits in her bags now. We are working on the +119 Alchemist trinket as her second trinket.
I have a question, why in whole article u didn’t mention
“Earring of Soulful Meditation”
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30665
on use gives 300 spirit and also gives healing, u should put it into the list i think,
Thankyou
@Silvia: Well, because that trinket is Priest-only, and this is a Druid blog!
