From the VSX Team Blog:
AddOn Studio for World of Warcraft is now available for free download, an open-source development tool aimed to bring the Visual Studio experience to building World of Warcraft add-ons. This WoW development environment uses the new free Visual Studio 2008 Shell isolated runtime and does not require any version of Visual Studio to be installed or licensed to download, install, and use it. Stay tuned to the blogs of Dan Fernandez and James Lau for upcoming blog posts about this project. Key features of AddOn Studio for World of Warcraft include:
- Visual Design Surface
- Lua Code Editor
- FrameXML IntelliSense
- Auto-Generate Table of Contents
- Auto-Generate Lua Events
- Many other goodies
I imagine this will open up the world of addon development to many, many veteran programmers. As a VB.NET developer, I admit the idea of developing using Visual Studio is pretty tantalazing. I might yet get that DDR-esque Lifebloom rotation mod I’ve always wanted!

The new Belkin n52te Tournament Edition SpeedPad is one of the most popular and easy-to-use gaming peripherals. Learn how to leverage it for all Druid roles with add-ons and custom macros.
Slick. I’m an ASP.NET boy, so if I ever feel the need, this could be fun.
I think I’ll be making a few of those addons I always wanted but could never be worried to learn the language.
Nice indeed for us devs that have sold our soul to the devil (M$
).
I might give it a try sometime, however it would be really cool for them to create some sort of compiler that would allow us to right in eg C# or VB and then compiling/translating everything to the relevant LUA etc files.
Anyway… Good news
